Fabio Di Giannantonio secured a sensational victory at the 2026 Catalan Grand Prix after surviving one of the most chaotic races of the season at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.
The Pertamina Enduro VR46 Racing Team rider claimed his first MotoGP victory since the 2023 Qatar Grand Prix following multiple crashes, red flags and penalties throughout a dramatic afternoon in Barcelona.
Originally, Joan Mir crossed the line in second ahead of Fermin Aldeguer, but a post-race tyre pressure penalty dropped the Honda rider down the order, promoting Aldeguer to second and Francesco Bagnaia onto the final podium spot.

Early Race Drama Triggers Red Flag
The race was already intense from the opening laps as Pedro Acosta grabbed the early lead ahead of Alex Marquez and Jorge Martin.
However, disaster struck on Lap 12 when Acosta suffered a technical issue on the main straight, leaving Alex Marquez with nowhere to go before colliding with the rear of the KTM machine in a heavy crash.
The incident scattered debris across the circuit and also caught out Di Giannantonio, Raul Fernandez and Johann Zarco.
Alex Marquez was later taken to hospital where he was diagnosed with a broken collarbone and a small fracture to his C7 vertebra. Zarco meanwhile suffered a small fracture and ligament damage to his knee after another separate incident during the restart.

Multiple Restarts Create More Chaos
Following the first red flag, the race restarted for 13 laps before another multi-rider crash at Turn 1 involving Bagnaia, Luca Marini and Zarco forced officials to stop the race again.
The final 12-lap restart saw Acosta once again leading early on ahead of Mir and Bagnaia, while championship contenders Jorge Martin and Marco Bezzecchi struggled after separate incidents involving the Aprilia riders.
As the race progressed, Di Giannantonio steadily worked his way forward before overtaking Mir and eventually Acosta for the lead with just three laps remaining.
The Italian quickly opened a comfortable advantage while chaos erupted behind him during the final lap battle for the podium positions.

Last Lap Contact Ends Acosta’s Podium Hopes
Acosta looked set for at least a podium finish before coming under heavy pressure from Mir, Aldeguer and Ai Ogura in the closing stages.
The drama peaked at the final corner when Ogura attempted an aggressive move on Acosta, resulting in contact that sent the KTM rider crashing out of podium contention entirely. Ogura was later handed a three-second penalty for the incident, dropping him down the order.
At the front however, Di Giannantonio remained untouchable as he celebrated a memorable return to the top step of the podium.

Bezzecchi Retains Championship Lead
Despite a difficult race weekend, Marco Bezzecchi still managed to finish inside the top five after post-race penalties were applied, helping the Italian retain the MotoGP championship lead heading into the next round at Italian Grand Prix in Mugello.
The dramatic Barcelona weekend also leaves several riders carrying injuries into the next race as MotoGP heads to Italy for another crucial chapter in the 2026 championship battle.
