2026 Yamaha Y16ZR-R Launched in Malaysia, Priced From RM10,888

The updated Yamaha Y16ZR-R gets more power, traction control and a new Bluetooth-connected display, while the Pramac Racing Replica Limited Edition available only 3,000 units.

Hong Leong Yamaha Motor has officially introduced the updated Yamaha Y16ZR-R in Malaysia, shortly after the model was launched in the Vietnamese market.

The 2026 Y16ZR-R is available in two versions, with the Standard variant priced at RM10,888, excluding insurance. It comes in three colour options: Kouka Grey, Raijin Green and Yoru Black.

For MotoGP fans, Yamaha Malaysia is also offering the Y16ZR-R Pramac Racing Replica Limited Edition, priced at RM13,388, with an added RM2,500 more than the standard model. Both versions of the Yamaha Y16ZR-R come with a two-year or 20,000km warranty, whichever comes first.

The updated Y16ZR-R brings what Yamaha describes as its most significant updates to the model since its original introduction in 2020. Starting with the design, the 2026 Yamaha Y16ZR-R receives extensively redesigned body panels across the motorcycle.

The changes give the moped a sharper and more aggressive appearance, while the LED headlight has also been updated. Yamaha claims the new lighting system provides brighter and more evenly distributed illumination.

Despite the extensive visual changes, the Y16ZR-R continues to retain the familiar underbone layout that has made the model popular among Malaysian riders.

Powering the Y16ZR-R remains Yamaha’s 155cc, liquid-cooled, fuel-injected single-cylinder engine with Variable Valve Actuation (VVA). For 2026, however, Yamaha has increased the compression ratio to 11.6:1, resulting in an increase in power output.

The new engine now produces 18.5 hp at 9,500 rpm, up from 17.7 hp previously, while peak torque remains at 14.4 Nm at 8,500 rpm. The engine is paired with a six-speed transmission and Assist & Slipper Clutch. Yamaha has also revised the final drive gearing, with the sprocket combination changed to 14/48T. According to Yamaha, the new setup is designed to provide quicker acceleration, particularly at higher speeds.

Another interesting update is the intake sound. Yamaha has developed a specially shaped airbox and air passages designed to enhance the intake sound reaching the rider, adding another layer to the riding experience.

One of the biggest additions to the Malaysian-spec Y16ZR-R is the inclusion of a Traction Control System (TCS). According to the information provided, the combination makes the Y16ZR-R the first Yamaha moped to feature traction control, adding another layer of electronic assistance to the popular 155cc platform.

The Y16ZR-R also receives an updated LCD digital instrument panel with a revised display. The unit can connect to Yamaha’s new Y-On application via Bluetooth. Its functions are similar to the Y-Connect system, allowing riders to access information such as incoming message and call notifications, maintenance schedules, route information, fuel consumption data and the motorcycle’s last recorded location. Other equipment includes a 12-volt charging socket and Yamaha’s Smart Key system. The fuel tank capacity remains at 5.4 litres.

The Y16ZR-R continues to use 17-inch wheels, with the front fitted with 90/80 tyres and the rear using 120/70 rubber. Braking at the front is handled by a 267mm disc with a two-piston calliper, while the rear receives a 267mm disc with a single-piston calliper. The model also comes equipped with single-channel ABS operating on the front brake. Suspension duties are carried out by telescopic forks at the front and a Kayaba monoshock at the rear.

For those looking for something more exclusive, Yamaha offers the Y16ZR-R Pramac Racing Replica Limited Edition. Adopting the 2026 livery campaigned by Jack Miller and Toprak Razgatlıoğlu, the model is strictly limited to 3,000 units, each featuring an individually numbered plaque on the left headlight cowl.

Beyond its eye-catching Grand Prix aesthetic, the Limited Edition steps up performance over the standard bike by adding a fully adjustable Öhlins rear monoshock.
