Hong Leong Yamaha Motor (HLYM) has officially launched the highly anticipated Yamaha YZF-R9 in Malaysia, priced at RM68,000, excluding insurance. The motorcycle will be offered exclusively in Icon Blue, with deliveries expected to begin in January 2027. Bookings are already open through authorised Yamaha dealerships.
The launch took place in Sungai Buloh alongside the introduction of Yamaha’s new high-performance motorcycle range concept, BLU. Positioned as the flagship of Yamaha’s R-Series lineup in Malaysia, the new R9 will be distributed through authorised Yamaha BLU Universe dealers nationwide.
Already introduced in international markets in 2024, the YZF-R9 brings Yamaha’s CP3 three-cylinder engine into its supersport lineup, combining the performance of the MT-09 with a dedicated sportbike chassis, aerodynamic bodywork and track-focused electronics.

Powering the YZF-R9 is an 890cc liquid-cooled, DOHC, three-cylinder CP3 engine, the same engine platform used in the Yamaha MT-09. The engine produces 119 PS at 10,000 rpm and 93 Nm of torque at 7,000 rpm, paired with a six-speed transmission. A two-mode quickshifter is also fitted as standard, allowing riders to shift gears without using the clutch.
The engine is housed within a specially developed Deltabox aluminium frame, which Yamaha claims is its lightest frame ever used on a supersport motorcycle, weighing just 9.7kg. The YZF-R9 features aerodynamic bodywork developed through extensive testing, including wind tunnel evaluations.
Its front winglets are designed to reduce front tyre lift during straight-line acceleration by up to seven per cent. When combined with the nose spoiler, the aerodynamic package can increase downforce by up to 10 per cent while cornering.

Suspension duties are handled by KYB components, comprising a fully adjustable 43mm inverted front fork and a fully adjustable rear monoshock. The setup allows riders to adjust the suspension according to their riding preferences and track conditions.
For braking, Yamaha equips the R9 with twin 320mm front discs paired with Brembo Stylema four-piston monobloc calipers. The braking system is further supported by a Brembo master cylinder and braided stainless steel brake hoses.
The YZF-R9 comes with an extensive electronic rider-assistance package managed by a six-axis Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU). Riders can select from three factory riding modes, two customisable modes and four dedicated Track modes.
The electronic package includes Power Delivery (PWR), Traction Control System (TCS), Slide Control System (SCS), Brake Control (BC), Back Slip Regulator (BSR), Engine Brake Management (EBM), Cruise Control, Lift Control (LIF) and Launch Control.

These systems can be adjusted through the handlebar switches and monitored through the motorcycle’s five-inch full-colour TFT instrument display. The display offers four selectable themes, including a dedicated Track mode with lap timing. Other information includes fuel level, fuel consumption, coolant temperature, gear position and riding data.
Beyond its onboard electronics, the YZF-R9 also supports smartphone connectivity through Yamaha’s MyRide application. For riders who frequently visit the circuit, the motorcycle is compatible with Yamaha’s Y-TRAC Rev smartphone application, which works alongside Yamaha Y-Connect to provide lap timing, riding data analysis and ride-log storage.

The system can record various riding parameters, including lean angle, engine rpm, speed, gear position and throttle opening, allowing riders to review their performance after each session.
Another interesting feature is the virtual pit board, which allows team members to send instructions directly to the motorcycle’s instrument display while the rider is on the track.
With its 890cc CP3 engine, lightweight Deltabox frame, Brembo braking components and advanced electronics, the Yamaha YZF-R9 brings a new performance option to Malaysia’s supersport segment.
