Marc Marquez overcomes a poor start and tear-off mishap to secure his third win of the season, edging out Jorge Martin as the championship race tightens with three rounds remaining.

Marc Marquez of Gresini Racing delivered a spectacular performance at the Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix, overcoming a difficult start to claim his third victory of the season. The six-time world champion edged out current championship leader Jorge Martin at Phillip Island, with reigning champion Francesco Bagnaia finishing in third.

Polesitter and sprint race winner Jorge Martin of Prima Pramac Racing had a strong start on Sunday, while Marquez experienced a disastrous launch, plunging down the order. Despite this, the Spaniard displayed his trademark resilience, working his way back through the pack to take the win, marking his fourth career victory at Phillip Island.

Marquez’s race got off to a challenging start when the tear-off film from his visor became lodged under his rear tyre just after the lights went out. Starting from second on the grid, he dropped to 13th position but quickly recovered, displaying remarkable pace as he climbed back to the front. 

“It was a big race today against Martín, and we had fun,” said Marquez. “This win is a real confidence boost. I had to remove a tear-off at the start because a huge fly was blocking my vision. From that point, I knew we had the pace to battle for a second, and when I got close to Jorge, I realised I could win.”

In the final laps, Marquez and Martin exchanged positions, with Marquez ultimately securing the top spot. Martin’s second-place finish extended his championship lead over Bagnaia by 20 points, solidifying his position at the top of the standings.

Bagnaia, who had qualified fifth, finished third, completing an all-Ducati podium. The twice MotoGP champion struggled to match the pace of Marquez and Martin throughout the weekend but will now focus on next week’s Thailand Grand Prix as the title race intensifies with only three rounds remaining.

Rounding out the top five were Italian riders Fabio Di Giannantonio and Enea Bastianini, who both delivered solid performances.

Notably absent from the race was Red Bull GasGas Tech3’s rookie sensation, Pedro Acosta, who missed the event after crashing during the sprint race. 

As the 2024 MotoGP season enters its final stretch, the top three contenders are closely battling for the championship: Jorge Martin (Prima Pramac Racing) leads with 424 points, followed by Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati Lenovo Team) at 404 points, and Marc Marquez (Gresini Racing MotoGP) with 345 points. 

With only a few races remaining, Marquez’s recent victory has intensified the competition, adding excitement to the season’s closing stages.
