Marc Márquez Wins Aragón GP, Cuts Championship Gap to 19 Points

Ducati Lenovo Team rider Marc Márquez claims a second consecutive Aragón Grand Prix victory as Jorge Martín maintains the championship lead.

Marc Márquez and the Ducati Lenovo Team continued their dominance at MotorLand Aragón, with the Spaniard securing victory in the 23-lap Aragón Grand Prix for the second consecutive edition of the event.

The result sees Márquez take maximum points from the 13th Grand Prix of the season and further reduce the gap to championship leader Jorge Martín to 19 points.

Márquez started strongly and initially took the lead, but his advantage disappeared after a counter-attack at Turn 3 dropped him to third. The Ducati rider quickly recovered, moving back into second place on Lap 2 before reclaiming the lead on Lap 6.

Once back at the front, Márquez began to manage his tyres before increasing his pace from Lap 10 onwards. He eventually pulled clear of his rivals to secure a relatively comfortable victory. The Ducati rider admitted that his race nearly got off to a difficult start after forgetting to disengage the rear ride-height device.

“I’m very happy with this double victory. I did say that the goal was to get as close as possible to 37 points and I’d say we did it. The strategy was the same as yesterday, but I was so focused on Turn 1 at the start that I forgot to disengage the rear height device. Given the mistake, the new target was to not crash after Turn 1, before getting back to doing my race. I tried to manage tyre wear the best I could before starting to push from Lap 10 onwards and pull away, and it went well,” Márquez said.

Marco Bezzecchi completed the podium, while Márc’s brother Alex Márquez finished fourth. Championship leader Martín crossed the line in fifth, allowing him to retain the championship lead despite Márquez’s victory. Martín now leaves Aragón with a 19-point advantage over Márquez and 24 points over Bezzecchi. Following the 13th Grand Prix of the season, Márquez sits second in the championship with 237 points.

The Aprilia rider, was satisfied with his progress throughout the weekend, particularly at a circuit where he admitted he had struggled for confidence.

“The sensations in the race were similar to those of the Sprint race, but I think that we still made a step forward. It’s true that I felt better in the race, so much that I did my fast lap at the end of the race. It was a weekend where we built confidence on a track that is extremely complicated for me, and we managed to improve in every session, taking steps forward and understanding what could help me on the track,” said Martín. 

Ducati continued to enjoy a strong showing, with Fermín Aldeguer finishing sixth and Fabio Di Giannantonio seventh after Aldeguer worked his way past his fellow Ducati rider. However, it was a difficult race for Francesco Bagnaia and Franco Morbidelli, with both Ducati riders crashing out of the Grand Prix from inside the top 10.

Diogo Moreira was once again the leading Honda rider for much of the race, keeping a train of competitors behind his LCR Honda before eventually finishing ninth. He was overtaken by Enea Bastianini on the final lap.

Jack Miller was the highest-placed Yamaha rider in 11th, finishing just behind KTM’s Brad Binder. Miller’s Pramac Yamaha teammate Toprak Razgatlıoğlu was unable to finish after becoming the third rider to crash out of the race. Raúl Fernández was the other retirement after his Trackhouse Aprilia appeared to suffer a gearbox failure early in the race.

With Aragón now complete, the MotoGP championship battle heads to Italy for the next round. The Grand Prix of San Marino and the Rimini Riviera will get underway on Friday, September 11, at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli.
