Honda and Tohoku University Establish New Research Center to Drive Future Mobility Innovation

Honda R&D Co., Ltd., the research and development subsidiary of Honda Motor Co., Ltd., has officially partnered with Japan’s Tohoku University to establish the Honda R&D x Tohoku University Innovative Mobility System Co-creation Research Center. The new research hub officially began operations on September 1, 2026, with the goal of accelerating innovation in future mobility technologies.

The research center, located within the Institute of Fluid Science (IFS) at Tohoku University, combines Honda’s expertise in mobility research and development with Tohoku University’s world-class academic capabilities. Together, both organisations aim to develop practical technologies that can solve societal challenges while creating new value for the future of transportation.

A Joint Research Hub for Next-Generation Mobility

The newly established Co-creation Research Center will function as a platform where engineers and researchers from Honda and Tohoku University work closely together to explore emerging technologies that could shape future mobility systems.

Rather than focusing solely on theoretical research, both parties intend to identify technologies with strong real-world potential and accelerate their path toward practical applications.

Honda says the collaboration will also strengthen the exchange of knowledge, research expertise, and talent development between industry and academia, creating a sustainable ecosystem for innovation.

Research Will Focus on Deep Technology and Practical Applications

The partnership outlines three major areas of activity throughout its three-year operation.

• The first objective is to collaborate with various faculties and research institutes across Tohoku University to identify promising trends in deep technology and advanced scientific research.
• The second phase involves researchers from Honda R&D and Tohoku University jointly evaluating these findings to formulate long-term research strategies that align with future mobility needs.
• Finally, both organisations will conduct joint research projects based on these strategies, with the ultimate aim of transforming research outcomes into technologies that can be implemented in real-world mobility products and services.

This approach allows both institutions to move beyond laboratory research by focusing on practical innovations that could benefit society.

Leadership Team Behind the Collaboration

The research center will be led by a team representing both Honda R&D and Tohoku University. Toshiro Kiura, Fellow at Honda R&D, has been appointed Director of Research Operations.

Supporting the initiative is Professor Kaoru Maruta, Associate Executive Vice President of Tohoku University and Professor at the Institute of Fluid Science, who will serve as Operation Support Manager.

The collaboration also includes Shigeru Omura, Chief Engineer at Honda R&D’s Research Center of Excellence, as the participating company liaison.

Several leading researchers from Tohoku University are also participating in the project, including:

• Masami Terauchi, Specially Appointed Professor at the Tohoku Center of Excellence for Microscopy (TCEM)
• Kazuhiko Komatsu, Professor at the Research Center for Green X-Tech under the Institute for Green Goals Initiative
• Yoshikatsu Nakano, Research Fellow at the Institute of Fluid Science

Their combined expertise spans advanced microscopy, green technologies, fluid science, and engineering, providing a multidisciplinary foundation for future mobility research.

Three-Year Collaboration Through 2029

The Honda R&D x Tohoku University Innovative Mobility System Co-creation Research Center will operate from September 1, 2026, until August 31, 2029.

During this period, both organisations aim to strengthen industry-academic collaboration while nurturing the next generation of researchers and engineers. The initiative is expected to contribute not only to future Honda mobility technologies but also to broader advancements that address societal and environmental challenges.
