In today’s world, the way we travel is changing quite fast with the help of advanced technology. Fueled by the transition towards cleaner energy sources and escalating fuel expenses, electric vehicles are no longer just a trend, they are becoming a perfect solution. While electric cars have already gained strong traction, the motorcycle segment is still catching up, leaving many riders wondering if switching to EV is truly worth it.

That’s where models like the Modenas MEV-1 Pro SX come into play. Positioned as Malaysia’s answer to smarter and more sustainable urban mobility, this electric scooter isn’t just a gimmick. It aims to be a proper alternative to traditional petrol-powered scooters. Interestingly, it carries strong European DNA, as it is based on the VMoto VS1, a premium electric model already available in Europe and China, now rebranded for the local market.

So the real question is, can this EV scooter actually replace your daily petrol ride, or is it still a step too early? Let’s find out.

MEV-1 Pro SX Review

Engine & Built

Malaysia is clearly catching the EV wave, and since the Malaysia Autoshow 2025, things have started to feel a lot more real. That’s where Motosikal dan Enjin Nasional Sdn. Bhd (MODENAS) stepped in with the launch of the MEV-1 Pro SX and MEV-2, marking a serious entry into the local electric scooter scene.

The MEV-1 Pro SX is actually based on the VMoto VS1 platform, so it already comes with some proven DNA from overseas markets. What you get here is a proper two-seater maxi-style electric scooter that doesn’t look or feel like a small experiment. It’s built solid, feels substantial, and more importantly, it’s designed to be used daily.

Power comes from a strong electric motor paired with a V3.0 vector-control system, which basically means smoother power delivery and better efficiency. It runs on a 60V 45Ah lithium-ion battery setup, giving it a claimed top speed of 92 km/h and up to 160 km of range on a full charge. On paper, that already puts it in the same category as a 125cc petrol commuter. That’s exactly the segment it’s targeting.

What makes this even more interesting is how it’s already being used in the real world. Pos Malaysia has started deploying the MEV-1 Pro for delivery operations as part of their move towards greener logistics. Working together with MODENAS and AVIS under DRB-HICOM, they’ve rolled out over a thousand units for daily use. That alone says a lot, because these bikes aren’t just for show, they’re being relied on for proper, heavy-duty daily work.

I was genuinely excited when I got the chance to test this EV scooter. Over the course of a week, I used it the way most Malaysians would, daily commutes, quick errands, and short city runs, just to see if it could realistically replace my usual petrol routine. I wanted to experience it properly, not just as a test ride, but as part of everyday life.

So I grabbed the keys from MODENAS and took the MEV-1 Pro SX out on the road. Well, here’s my honest take on how it feels, how it rides, and whether going electric actually makes sense for daily use in Malaysia.

MEV-1 Pro SX Review

Engine vs Motor

People often wonder how a motorcycle “engine” works, especially when comparing electric bikes to traditional petrol machines. The reality is, both are completely different in how they deliver power, and that difference is exactly what shapes the riding experience on the road.

When it comes to performance, the Modenas MEV-1 Pro SX actually feels more lively than you’d expect from an electric scooter. It’s powered by an electric motor producing around 4.3 kW, with a peak of about 4.9 kW, giving it a nice balance between efficiency and usable performance for daily riding.

On a typical petrol bike, power builds up progressively. You twist the throttle, the revs climb, and depending on the bike, you’ll feel the gears working through the range. There’s usually a slight delay before the power fully comes in, and you also get engine braking, which helps slow the bike down naturally when you roll off the throttle.

With the MEV-1 Pro SX, it’s a completely different experience. Since it’s fully electric, there’s no traditional engine, no gearbox, and no waiting. The moment you twist the throttle, torque comes in instantly. It feels smooth, direct, and surprisingly responsive, especially when moving off from a standstill or navigating through city traffic.

Design & Features

Visually, the MEV-1 Pro SX is clearly built with practicality in mind. You can tell right away that it was designed with delivery and daily utility use as a priority. The design is simple, clean, and purposeful, very much like most modern EV scooters.

The overall styling leans towards a minimalist look, but in a good way. It doesn’t try too hard to be flashy, instead it focuses on being functional and dependable. The solid frame and straightforward design give it a workhorse character, something that fits well for urban Malaysian use where reliability matters more than looks.

What’s interesting is that the MEV-1 Pro SX also carries design input influenced by Italian engineering, which explains the refined feel in its overall build and riding character. It’s built to strike a balance between performance and everyday usability.

Underneath, the Vector Controller V3.0 plays a big role in how the scooter behaves. It optimises power delivery and improves efficiency, giving you smoother throttle response, better energy use, and that instant torque feel that EV riders will appreciate.

On Malaysian roads, which we all know can be unpredictable, this scooter handles itself quite well. With up to 210 Nm of wheel torque, it has no issue tackling ramps, or even steeper inclines. Whether it’s a parking ramp or a hilly road, it pulls through confidently without feeling strained.

Comfort is another area where it does well. Compared to some petrol scooters that can feel a bit rough or vibey, this one is much more refined. The hydraulic suspension setup, 380 mm at the front and 280 mm at the rear, does a good job of soaking up bumps and uneven surfaces.

For braking, it comes with a Combined Braking System (CBS) using a 240 mm front disc and a 180 mm rear disc. It distributes braking force more evenly, which adds a layer of confidence, especially during sudden stops or in wet conditions. Keep in mind, however, that it lacks an Anti-lock Braking System (ABS).

Riding Experiences

Out on the road, the difference is immediately noticeable. On a typical petrol scooter, you twist the throttle, the revs build up, the transmission catches up, and only then the bike starts moving. It’s a process most riders are familiar with, you can hear it, you can feel it through the vibrations.

But the moment you hop onto this MEV-1 Pro SX, that whole experience disappears. Twist the throttle and it just moves. There’s no delay, no build-up, and almost no sound at all. The torque comes in instantly in one smooth, continuous push, making every take-off feel clean, quiet, and effortless. It’s a very different sensation, especially if you’ve been riding petrol bikes for your whole life.

The riding position also plays a big role in making it easy to live with. With a seat height of 760 mm and a weight of around 145 KG, getting on and off the scooter feels natural and confidence-inspiring for daily use. In fact, I have nothing to worry about when it comes to height. The 154 mm ground clearance and 1,366 mm wheelbase help keep the scooter stable while still being practical enough for Malaysian roads.

As you ride further, the handling feels light and predictable. It’s easy to control, whether you’re cruising or moving through tight spaces. I can say that the telescopic front suspension and hydraulic rear shock do a good job of absorbing bumps and uneven roads, making daily rides more comfortable.

Also, whether it’s stopping at traffic lights or filtering through narrow gaps, the grip from the 100/80-16 front tyre and 110/80-14 rear tyre also feels stable and reassuring. It’s not that aggressive, but it’s smooth, confident, and very easy to ride.

Disadvantages

One downside I noticed with this EV is how quiet it is. While the silent ride is nice and smooth, it can also be a bit risky. In heavy traffic, other road users might not realise you’re approaching, especially when filtering between cars.

It’s something you’ll need to adapt to by being more alert and maybe relying more on your horn or positioning. That said, the quiet nature of this EV actually works really well in calmer environments. Riding through residential areas or quieter roads feels peaceful and refined, which is where this scooter really shines.

Distance Range & Charging

On the daily run between home and work, the electric setup really starts to show its strengths. The EV scooter is clearly built for urban use, and with a claimed range of up to 135 km on a full charge, it’s more than enough for typical commutes, plus a few extra errands without stressing about battery levels.

Charging is handled by a 60V 45Ah ATL lithium battery, and one thing I noticed is how consistent the performance feels even when the battery starts to drop. It doesn’t suddenly feel weak or sluggish, the power delivery remains smooth and usable throughout the ride.

What makes it even more convenient is the onboard charger. You don’t need anything complicated, just plug it in and let it charge. From empty to full, it takes about 3.5 hours for me, which is actually quite practical. You can easily charge it overnight or even during working hours, and it’ll be ready to go again.

Another small feature that ended up being surprisingly useful is the USB charging port. It sounds simple, but when I’m using navigation or taking calls on the go, having my phone constantly ready makes a big difference.

In the end, the routine becomes very straightforward. Just charge, ride, and repeat. No more fuel stops, no more worrying about petrol prices. It’s a different lifestyle, but one that feels easy to adapt to.

Conclusion

Overall, the Modenas MEV-1 Pro SX feels like a strong glimpse into the future of daily commuting. The benefits are clear from the start. No fuel stops, lower maintenance, and a cleaner, quieter ride all add up to a less stressful everyday experience. With how far EV technology has come, the riding experience now feels refined and user-friendly, especially with its instant torque, smooth delivery, and completely gear-free operation.

What stands out the most is how well it fits into modern urban life. EV scooters like this are built for stop-and-go traffic, short commutes, and daily errands, which is exactly how most of us ride in Malaysia. After spending time with it, the biggest takeaway is just how effortless everything feels. From riding to charging, it definitely removes many of the usual hassles of petrol bikes and replaces them with something simpler and more convenient.

At a price of RM13,470 excluding insurance and road tax, it positions itself as a practical option for riders looking to move towards a more efficient and comfortable daily ride. It might not completely replace petrol bikes for everyone just yet, but eventually it definitely proves that the switch to electric is no longer something far off, it’s already here.

If you ever get the chance, it’s worth taking one for a spin. The difference in riding experience might just surprise you seriously.
