Yamaha YZF-R2 Makes Global Debut in India

Yamaha YZF-R2 Makes Global Debut in India

The new 204cc supersport arrives as Yamaha’s latest addition to its R-series, positioned above the popular YZF-R15.

Yamaha has officially launched the YZF-R2 in the Indian market, with prices starting at Rs 2.30 lakh (approximately RM9,709). The new entry marks Yamaha’s latest addition to its R-series and serves as the much-anticipated successor to the popular YZF-R15 in the brand’s small-capacity supersport line-up.

The YZF-R2 is built around an all-new platform and introduces a new 204cc single-cylinder, liquid-cooled engine. While it retains the basic engine configuration found on the R15, the larger-capacity unit produces 26.5hp at 10,000rpm and 19.3Nm of torque at 8,000rpm.

Unlike the R15’s SOHC configuration, the R2 uses a DOHC setup. However, it does not feature Yamaha’s Variable Valve Actuation (VVA) system, which is one of the key technologies associated with the R15’s 155cc engine. Adding to the engine’s technology package, the R2 uses DLC (diamond-like carbon) coating on its valves, a technology previously seen on Yamaha’s former flagship YZF-R1.

The new R2 also focuses heavily on keeping weight down. Yamaha lists a seat height of 810mm and a kerb weight of 149kg, making it one of the lightest motorcycles in its segment. The combination of its low weight and 26.5hp output gives the R2 an advantage over rivals such as the KTM RC 200 and Hero Karizma XMR.

Electronics and equipment are another major part of the YZF-R2 package. The motorcycle comes with a ride-by-wire throttle, enabling three riding modes: Street, Sport and Rain, while an assist and slipper clutch and dual-channel ABS are offered as standard.

Suspension duties are handled by 37mm USD front forks, while the cockpit features a 5-inch TFT instrument display. Yamaha has also equipped the R2 with traction control technology already available on the R15 M.

The motorcycle is offered in three variants, with each receiving its own colour scheme and equipment level. The second variant adds body-coloured alloy wheels and a bi-directional quickshifter, which Yamaha positions as a segment-first feature.

At the top of the range, the YZF-R2 M receives additional premium equipment, including preload-adjustable front and rear suspension, adjustable brake and clutch levers, a faux-suede seat and a smart keyless system. A quickshifter is also available on selected higher-end colour variants, following a similar strategy to Yamaha’s R15 range.

With a larger engine, lightweight platform, extensive electronics and multiple equipment levels, the YZF-R2 represents a significant step up from the R15 while remaining within the lightweight supersport category.

For now, the YZF-R2 has been launched for the Indian market. Whether Yamaha will eventually introduce the new 204cc R-series model to other markets remains something to watch.
