Honda MotoGP test rider Aleix Espargaro is currently recovering after undergoing major spinal surgery, following an accident during a private test session at Sepang earlier this month.
The Spaniard sustained four fractured vertebrae in the incident. Fortunately, despite the seriousness of the injuries, it has been confirmed that the damage did not impact his spinal cord.
Surgery required after further medical evaluation
After returning to Spain for additional medical assessments, doctors determined that surgery was necessary to stabilise his condition. Espargaro subsequently underwent a complex operation lasting more than six hours, during which surgeons successfully fused the affected vertebrae.
Sharing an update with fans via social media, Espargaro confirmed that the procedure went according to plan and expressed gratitude towards the medical team involved.
“Hi everyone, I finally had surgery yesterday and they fused all four of my vertebrae,” he said. “It was over six hours in the operating room, where Dr. Fiol and his team did an excellent job.”
The exact circumstances surrounding the crash have yet to be disclosed. It is also not confirmed whether Espargaro was riding Honda’s current 1000cc MotoGP machine or the newer 850cc prototype at the time of the accident.

Focus now shifts to recovery
With the surgery successfully completed, Espargaro’s focus now turns to recovery and rehabilitation. While no official timeline has been provided, the priority will be ensuring a safe and complete return to fitness following the serious back injury.
The experienced rider, who now serves as a test rider for Honda Racing Corporation (HRC), will be aiming to return to action once fully healed.
