Sepang International Circuit Temporarily Closed for Upgrades

Preparations are underway ahead of the 2026 Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix with improvements to the circuit, facilities and main road network around Sepang.

The Sepang International Circuit (SIC) will be temporarily closed starting September 7 to make way for renovation and improvement works in preparation for the 2026 Formula 1 (F1) Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix which is scheduled to take place from October 2 to 4.

According to the Minister of Youth and Sports, Dr. Mohammed Taufiq Johari, the temporary closure allows for comprehensive upgrade work to be carried out, involving the track surface, spectator seating, toilets and various other facilities on the circuit to ensure that SIC is at its best before receiving the presence of teams, racers and fans from around the world.

During this period, the public will no longer be allowed to rent or use the circuit until all improvement work is completed. The Ministry of Youth and Sports is also coordinating preparations through the main committee, technical committee and several sub-committees to ensure the smooth organisation of the race.

Apart from improvements to the circuit, the government is also focusing on road infrastructure around Sepang. Deputy Minister of Housing and Local Government and Sepang Member of Parliament, Datuk Aiman ​​Athirah Sabu, said that RM17.5 million has been allocated for road maintenance and upgrading works to ensure more comfortable and safe access to the circuit ahead of the F1 race.

Of this amount, RM16 million is allocated for Federal Road maintenance works involving routes FT26, FT27, FT29 and FT344, while the Selangor State Government has provided RM1.5 million to upgrade State Road B48 (Jenderam–Sepang). The works include road surface repairs, road furniture maintenance and street lighting improvements.

According to him, all road upgrading works are expected to be completed by mid-September, a few weeks before the Formula 1 action begins. The allocation was channeled earlier following the re-organisation of the F1 race in Malaysia, thus providing an opportunity to improve the quality of infrastructure in the Sepang area.

At the same time, the government announced that all preparations with SIC and the Bahrain International Circuit, including ticketing, parking, logistics and coordination with relevant agencies, are proceeding as planned. This move is aimed at ensuring the smooth organisation of the world-class event and providing the best experience for all visitors.

Hosting Formula 1 in Sepang is also expected to have a positive impact on the local economy through increased tourist arrivals, business activities and the hospitality sector throughout the race. With circuit and road upgrades currently underway, Malaysia looks set to once again host one of the world’s most prestigious motorsports events.
