Malaysia will remain on the MotoGP calendar for another five years after the government officially approved the renewal of the Malaysian Grand Prix from 2027 to 2031, ensuring the country’s place as one of the championship’s key destinations.
The announcement further strengthens Malaysia’s long-standing relationship with MotoGP, which began in 1991. Since 1999, the Petronas Sepang International Circuit has served as the permanent home of the Malaysian Grand Prix, with only the 2020 and 2021 editions cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Minister of Youth and Sports, YB Dr. Mohammed Taufiq Johari, said the Cabinet had given full approval for the extension during its meeting on 15 April 2026, describing the agreement as more than just securing Malaysia’s place on the MotoGP calendar.
“We are delighted that the Government has granted full approval for the renewal of MotoGP Malaysia from 2027 to 2031. This renewal goes beyond securing Malaysia’s place on the MotoGP global calendar.”
“It reflects our commitment to strengthening Malaysia’s position as a leading motorsports destination while creating opportunities through economic growth, talent development and industry expansion,” he said.

He added that MotoGP Malaysia has become a unifying national event and remains the country’s longest-running international sporting event since its debut in 1991.
MotoGP CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta welcomed the extension, highlighting Malaysia’s importance to the championship and its growing fan base.
“Malaysia is an important market for MotoGP, where we have a strong fanbase and have seen the positive economic impact of MotoGP increase year-on-year. Sepang is a fantastic home for our sport, well-connected to one of the world’s truly global cities, Kuala Lumpur.”
“Great racing, local passion and international appeal create an unforgettable event every year in Malaysia, and we look forward to returning until 2031,” he said.
MotoGP’s popularity in Malaysia continues to grow, with the 2025 Malaysian Grand Prix attracting a record 190,977 spectators, making it the highest-attended edition in the event’s history. Earlier this year, the 2026 MotoGP Season Launch held in Kuala Lumpur also drew tens of thousands of fans, further demonstrating Malaysia’s importance within the championship.

According to the Ministry of Youth and Sports, MotoGP continues to generate significant economic benefits through increased tourism activities, including higher demand for accommodation, transportation, hospitality and retail services during race weekend.
Beyond tourism, the event also plays an important role in promoting Malaysia’s motorsport industry by supporting local talent development, technical expertise and greater participation in international racing.
The five-year extension is expected to further strengthen Malaysia’s sports economy by creating business opportunities, generating employment and increasing the country’s global visibility through one of the world’s biggest motorsport championships.

The Petronas Sepang International Circuit remains one of MotoGP’s most iconic venues, widely recognised for its fast, technical layout and passionate fan atmosphere that continues to attract riders and spectators from around the world.
The 2026 Malaysian MotoGP will take place from 30 October to 1 November 2026 at the Petronas Sepang International Circuit.
