The Malaysian government has announced that 60,000 students aged between 16 and 17 years old from B40 families will receive free Class B2 motorcycle licences through the newly introduced MyLesen B2 Sekolah (MyB2S) Programme nationwide this year.
The initiative, introduced through Road Transport Department Malaysia and the Ministry of Education Malaysia, aims to improve road safety awareness among students while ensuring more young riders are legally licensed on Malaysian roads.
Anthony Loke, Malaysia’s Transport Minister, said the programme was created following growing concerns over the increasing number of school students riding motorcycles without valid licences, particularly in rural areas where motorcycles are commonly used for daily transportation to school.
According to him, the government wants to provide a practical solution while encouraging compliance with road regulations among young riders.
The programme involves a total allocation of RM18.5 million, with Johor receiving the highest number of beneficiaries nationwide. Around 8,200 students in the state are expected to benefit from the initiative, involving an allocation of RM2.46 million.
Anthony Loke also highlighted worrying road safety statistics involving young motorcyclists in Malaysia.
He revealed that more than 6,000 fatal road accidents are recorded annually nationwide, with approximately 65 per cent involving motorcyclists and pillion riders. Most victims are aged between 16 and 25 years old, including school students.
The government hopes the programme will help reduce the number of unlicensed riders while improving overall road safety awareness among Malaysian youths.
Fadhlina Sidek, Malaysia’s Education Minister, was also present during the programme launch held at Austin International Convention Centre.
The Ministry of Education will assist in identifying eligible students through a screening process before the final list is submitted to JPJ for implementation nationwide.
