The final round of the 2024 WorldSBK Superbike World Championship is set to take place this weekend at the Circuito de Jerez-Ángel Nieto, located in the south of Spain.
Toprak Razgatlioglu (ROKiT BMW Motorrad) enters the event as the championship leader with 473 points, holding a 46-point advantage over his closest rival, Nicholas Bulega (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati), who stands at 427 points.
With a maximum of 62 points up for grabs over the weekend, the battle for the championship will unfold in Jerez. Razgatlioglu, aiming for the title, could potentially secure the crown during Race 1 if he limits his points loss to Bulega to no more than 9 points. This scenario favours the Turkish rider, making him the clear favourite to clinch the championship early.
Meanwhile, Alvaro Bautista (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati), who sits third in the standings with 402 points, is now out of title contention but is expected to support his teammate Bulega in the championship fight. Bautista, the reigning WorldSBK champion, dominated at Jerez last year with a hat-trick of wins and holds the record for the most victories at the track, with five.
Danilo Petrucci (Barni Spark Racing Team), who was recently crowned best independent rider in Estoril, occupies fourth place in the championship with 292 points and will be looking to maintain his form to finish the season strongly.
In the previous Superpole race, Razgatlioglu appeared to have the 12-lap contest under control, but Bulega closed in during the latter stages of the race, setting a new lap record on Lap 9. Bulega’s exceptional exit from the final corner, combined with a slipstream advantage, allowed him to edge Razgatlioglu by a mere 0.003 seconds—the closest finish in WorldSBK history!
As the final weekend approaches, Jerez has been a successful venue for several top riders, including Jonathan Rea (Pata Prometeon Yamaha), Scott Redding (Bonovo Action BMW), and Michael van der Mark (ROKiT BMW Motorrad), who have all tasted victory at the circuit in past seasons.
This will mark Nicholas Bulega’s first appearance at Jerez in the WorldSBK class, though he has already achieved a double victory at the track in the 2023 WorldSSP category, giving him confidence heading into the final round.
With the title on the line and history in the making, this weekend’s races at Jerez promise to deliver a thrilling conclusion to the 2024 WorldSBK season.
