Spanish oil giant Repsol will end its sponsorship of the Honda MotoGP team starting next season, bringing to a close one of the longest and most successful partnerships in motorsport history.
Since 1995, Repsol and Honda have been synonymous with success, forming one of the most successful collaborations in motorsport history. Together, they secured numerous championships with MotoGP icons such as Mick Doohan, Alex Criville, Valentino Rossi, Nicky Hayden, Casey Stoner, and Marc Marquez.
Despite their historic success, Honda’s recent struggles, including no wins since 2021, signalled the end of this iconic collaboration.
A statement from the Spanish petroleum company read: “Repsol is grateful for HRC’s commitment and dedication during all these years in which we have worked together.
“The multi-energy company will continue to be linked to motor racing to continue developing products and services of the highest quality.”
HRC wrote, “Honda HRC and Repsol have enjoyed a partnership which has become synonymous with success at the highest level.
“Going beyond sponsorship, it has been a true collaboration between both companies, striving to continue as the reference in Grand Prix motorcycling. Honda HRC wishes Repsol all the best in their future business and sporting ventures.”
Honda has been on a downward trajectory since Marquez’s last MotoGP title in 2019, with the Spaniard missing the 2020 season due to injury.
Italian manufacturers Ducati and Aprilia soon overtook Honda, and Marquez’s departure to Gresini Ducati Racing at the end of 2023 further added to Honda’s woes, along with the loss of Red Bull as a sponsor.
Honda, with riders Joan Mir and Luca Marini, currently sits at the bottom of the MotoGP Constructors’ standings with 37 points, while Ducati leads the pack with 463 points.
