BMW M 1000 RS Reportedly Coming for 2027 as New Sport-Touring Model

BMW Motorrad is reportedly preparing a new M 1000 RS for 2027, potentially bringing the brand’s high-performance M technology into the sport-touring segment.

BMW Motorrad appears to be expanding its M motorcycle family for 2027 with the introduction of a new M 1000 RS, according to certification documents from the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and California Air Resources Board (CARB).

The new model is not the long-awaited M 1300 GS, which is still expected to arrive but could reportedly be pushed to the 2028 model year.

The M 1000 RS has been independently certified by both US regulatory agencies for the 2027 model year, with the model listed alongside the M 1000 RR.

According to the certification data, the M 1000 RS will use the same 999cc inline-four engine as the M 1000 RR. The CARB documents reportedly list emissions data identical to the 2026 M 1000 RR, suggesting the new model could retain the same claimed output of 205 hp at 13,000 rpm and 83 lb-ft (112 Nm) at 11,100 rpm.

The M 1000 RR itself is also set to receive a new third-generation lightweight frame for the 2027 model year. However, the M 1000 RS is expected to have a distinctly different purpose from the track-focused RR.

A Sport-Touring M Motorcycle

BMW’s RS designation has historically been associated with sport-touring motorcycles. The letters originally stood for Rennsport, or motorsport, before BMW adopted the interpretation Reise und Sport, meaning “Travel and Sport”. The current BMW lineup includes the R 1300 RS, powered by a 1,300cc Boxer engine producing a claimed 145 hp and 110 lb-ft (149 Nm) of torque.

The M 1000 RS would therefore represent a high-performance interpretation of BMW’s sport-touring concept, essentially combining the engine and performance technology of the M 1000 RR with a more road-focused package. The certification data provides another clue. The CARB documents reportedly list an Equivalent Inertia Mass (EIM) of 280 kg (617.3 lb) for the M 1000 RS, compared with 270 kg (595 lb) for the M 1000 RR.

EIM is used during dynamometer testing to represent a motorcycle’s weight together with the rotating inertia of its components. The higher figure suggests the M 1000 RS could be around 22 lb (10 kg) heavier than the M 1000 RR.

That additional weight would make sense for a sport-touring motorcycle, which would likely require a stronger rear subframe for luggage, along with more accommodating passenger provisions and potentially greater touring comfort.

Could an S 1000 RS Follow?

BMW’s M motorcycles have traditionally been high-performance derivatives of existing models. The M 1000 RR is based around the S 1000 RR, while the M 1000 R and M 1000 XR correspond with the S 1000 R and S 1000 XR respectively.

However, there is currently no indication of an S 1000 RS alongside the M 1000 RS. It therefore remains unclear whether BMW intends to introduce the M 1000 RS as a standalone model or eventually develop a less powerful S 1000 RS version.

For now, BMW has yet to officially announce the M 1000 RS. The motorcycle is expected to make its official debut later this year, potentially in October or November, with EICMA 2026 also a possible venue for its unveiling.

If confirmed, the M 1000 RS would give BMW Motorrad a new flagship sport-touring motorcycle combining the performance of its M division with the practicality expected from an RS model.
