Aprilia Racing’s Jorge Martín continues to make gradual progress in his recovery from serious injuries sustained during last weekend’s Qatar Grand Prix, though medical staff emphasise the need for continued caution in his treatment.

The Spanish rider remains under close observation at Hamad General Hospital’s intensive care unit following a high-side crash that caused pleuropulmonary trauma and multiple rib fractures. Medical teams performed immediate drainage procedures to address his collapsed lung, with doctors reporting a positive response to the treatment.

“Jorge’s condition is progressing satisfactorily,” said MotoGP Medical Director Ángel Charte. “The chest drainage for his hemopneumothorax is progressing favorably. His pain is under control, despite the rib fractures he has. For now, he must continue with the pulmonary drainage process until it is 90% resolved. After that, it will take some days before he can be transferred by medical aircraft to our hospital.”

Aprilia Racing has assembled a comprehensive medical team, including specialists from Hamad Hospital, Lifenet Healthcare, and MotoGP’s own medical staff to oversee Martín’s care. The current treatment protocol focuses on pain management, respiratory therapy, and continuous cardiovascular monitoring.

From his hospital bed, Martín expressed gratitude to supporters: “Thank you from the bottom of my heart to everyone who has supported me. These have been difficult days, but now I’m starting to move a bit more and feel better, although the pain is still intense. I’d like to thank Aprilia, my fans and everyone who is helping me. I will continue to fight to be one of the strongest ever.”

With Martín sidelined, Aprilia has confirmed test rider Lorenzo Savadori will substitute at next weekend’s Spanish Grand Prix in Jerez. Medical staff declined to speculate on Martín’s potential return date, noting the importance of proper healing before considering a return to competition.

Lifenet Healthcare’s Chief Medical Officer Franco Perona stressed the phased nature of recovery: “Martín is currently undergoing rib pain relief and drainage therapy, which has had a significant positive effect on the re-expansion of his lung following the pneumothorax. Lifenet Healthcare will continue to be available to help manage this difficult moment as we await Martín’s functional recovery phase and his return to the track”.

Aprilia Racing promises further updates as Martín’s condition develops. The team has mobilised its full medical resources to ensure the 2024 MotoGP Champion receives optimal care during his rehabilitation process.
