Sidelined by an Indonesian GP highside, the Prima Pramac Yamaha rider faces shoulder surgery as Augusto Fernandez takes over for the season finish.

Toprak Razgatlıoğlu will miss the remainder of the 2026 MotoGP World Championship after further medical examinations confirmed that his shoulder injury requires surgery.
The Prima Pramac Yamaha MotoGP rider travelled to Milan on October 21 for additional assessments following a highside crash at the Indonesian Grand Prix at Mandalika. The latest examinations revealed that the injury was more serious than initially believed, prompting the decision to proceed with surgery.
Following discussions between Razgatlıoğlu and his medical team, the operation has been scheduled for October 26 in Milan. The Turkish rider will subsequently begin his rehabilitation programme, with his recovery taking priority over returning to competition.
As a result, Razgatlıoğlu will miss the Australian Grand Prix at Phillip Island and the remaining rounds of the 2026 MotoGP season.
Augusto Fernandez to Replace Razgatlıoğlu
Yamaha test rider Augusto Fernandez is set to step in for Razgatlıoğlu at Phillip Island and continue racing for Prima Pramac Yamaha MotoGP until the Turkish rider is ready to return.
As Yamaha’s official test rider, Fernandez is already familiar with the YZR-M1, allowing him to take on the replacement role while the team continues its development work throughout the remaining races.
Prima Pramac Yamaha MotoGP team director Gino Borsoi said, “We are very sorry for Toprak, as we know how much he wanted to race at Phillip Island and continue his journey with the YZR-M1.”
“He has been working hard to adapt to MotoGP, and it is disappointing that this injury will prevent him from continuing that process over the coming races. However, his health must come first, and we will support him throughout his recovery and look forward to seeing him back on the bike when he is ready,” Borsoi said.
Razgatlıoğlu Disappointed to Miss Phillip Island
For Razgatlıoğlu, missing the Australian Grand Prix is particularly disappointing given his previous success and memorable experiences at Phillip Island during his World Superbike career.
The Turkish rider had been looking forward to competing at the circuit aboard the YZR-M1, making the injury setback even more difficult to accept.
He explained that the additional medical examinations following the Mandalika crash revealed the extent of the damage, leading to the decision to undergo surgery.
“After further medical assessments following the crash in Mandalika, it became clear that my shoulder injury is worse than we first believed. As a result, I will undergo surgery in the coming days to give myself the best chance of making a full recovery and returning at 100%,” he added.
Although the decision means ending his debut MotoGP campaign prematurely, Razgatlıoğlu believes surgery is the appropriate step for his long-term recovery. He also wished Jack Miller well for his home Grand Prix at Phillip Island, which is scheduled to be the circuit’s final MotoGP event.
Focus Shifts to Recovery
Razgatlıoğlu’s absence marks a setback in his ongoing adaptation to MotoGP, having made the transition from World Superbike to the premier motorcycle racing category with Prima Pramac Yamaha. With surgery scheduled for October 26, his immediate priority will be rehabilitation and recovering fully before considering a return to racing.
Yamaha and Prima Pramac Yamaha MotoGP have pledged their support throughout the recovery process, while Fernandez prepares to take over riding duties for the remaining rounds.
For now, the focus remains on ensuring Razgatlıoğlu receives the necessary treatment and returns to full fitness before getting back on the MotoGP machine.
