Prima Pramac Yamaha MotoGP heads to Phillip Island for a memorable Australian Grand Prix weekend, but without Toprak Razgatlıoğlu, who has been ruled out after suffering an injury during the Indonesian Grand Prix at Mandalika.
Following further medical examinations in Milan, the Turkish rider was diagnosed with an injury that requires surgery, which is scheduled for October 26. As a result, Yamaha test rider Augusto Fernandez will step in to replace Razgatlıoğlu for the Australian Grand Prix.
Razgatlıoğlu to Undergo Surgery
Razgatlıoğlu’s Australian Grand Prix debut will have to wait after his highside crash at Mandalika left him requiring surgery. The injury was confirmed after additional medical assessments in Italy, with the 2026 WorldSBK champion now focusing on his recovery before returning to racing.
His absence opens the door for Yamaha test rider Augusto Fernandez, who will join Prima Pramac Yamaha MotoGP for the Phillip Island round. Fernandez expressed his support for Razgatlıoğlu while looking forward to returning to MotoGP action.
“First of all, I want to send my best wishes to Toprak for his recovery. I hope everything goes well with the surgery and that he can get back on the bike as soon as possible.
“For me, it’s really exciting to be back racing, especially with a great team like Prima Pramac Yamaha MotoGP. I’m looking forward to getting on the bike, starting to work with the team and doing my best over the next few races.”
Jack Miller Ready for Emotional Home Farewell
The Australian Grand Prix will also be a landmark event for Jack Miller, who is set to contest his final home race in MotoGP before moving to the Superbike World Championship next season.
Phillip Island has been one of the most memorable circuits of Miller’s career. He claimed victory there in the 2014 Moto3 race before securing a MotoGP podium with third place in 2019. The circuit also honoured the Australian by naming Turn 4 “Miller Corner” in 2022.
Miller admitted the weekend will be emotional as MotoGP also bids farewell to Phillip Island, with the championship scheduled to move to Adelaide from 2027.
“I’m really looking forward to my home Grand Prix. It’s going to be a special weekend for both myself and the team, as it will be my last home race in MotoGP before moving to Superbikes, and also the last time MotoGP races at Phillip Island.”
“This place has given me some great memories, so it’s going to be an emotional one. We’ve got something special planned for the fans, and I’m looking forward to sharing it with everyone.”
He also wished his teammate a speedy recovery.
“It’s a shame Toprak won’t be able to join us this weekend. I know he was looking forward to riding here, so I wish him all the best with the surgery and recovery. Hopefully, he’ll be back feeling strong soon.”
Team Focuses on Strong Finish
Team Director Gino Borsoi believes the Australian Grand Prix presents an opportunity for Prima Pramac Yamaha MotoGP to bounce back after a difficult run of races.
While disappointed to lose Razgatlıoğlu for such an important event, Borsoi is confident Fernandez can help the team continue its development over the final rounds of the season.
“The Australian Grand Prix will be an important weekend for the whole team, and especially for Jack, as it will be his final home race in MotoGP.”
“Unfortunately, Toprak will not be able to race following his injury, and we are sorry to see him miss such an important event. Yamaha test rider Augusto Fernandez will step in for him this weekend, and we will do our best to support him.”
Borsoi also acknowledged the team’s recent struggles and hopes Phillip Island can mark the beginning of a stronger finish to the 2026 campaign.
Farewell to Phillip Island
Beyond the rider storylines, this year’s Australian Grand Prix will be historic as it marks the final MotoGP event to be held at Phillip Island before the championship moves to Adelaide in 2027.
Known for its fast-flowing layout, spectacular coastal scenery and unpredictable weather, Phillip Island has been a favourite among riders and fans since becoming a permanent fixture on the MotoGP calendar in 1997.
For Prima Pramac Yamaha MotoGP, the weekend represents both a farewell to one of the sport’s most iconic venues and an opportunity to end the season on a positive note.
