Fermin Aldeguer has successfully undergone surgery on his right hand following a crash during the Indonesian Grand Prix, but it remains uncertain whether the Gresini Racing rider will be fit in time for next weekend’s Australian Grand Prix at Phillip Island.
The Spaniard sustained a fracture at the base of the first metacarpal bone in his right hand after crashing out on Lap 2 of the MotoGP race at Mandalika. At the time of the incident, Aldeguer was running in fourth position before losing control of his Ducati Desmosedici at Turn 16.
Successful Surgery in Barcelona
Following the race weekend, Aldeguer travelled to Barcelona, where he underwent surgery to repair the fractured bone. The procedure involved the insertion of screws to stabilize the injury.
The 21-year-old later reassured fans through his social media channels, confirming that the operation had gone smoothly and that he was recovering well.
While the surgery was successful, neither Gresini Racing nor MotoGP officials have confirmed whether Aldeguer will be able to compete at the Australian Grand Prix, scheduled to take place at Phillip Island from October 23 to 25.
Injury Confirmed by MotoGP Medical Team
MotoGP Medical Director Dr. Angel Charte confirmed at the circuit that Aldeguer had suffered a fracture at the base of the first metacarpal bone in his right hand. Due to the nature of the injury, surgery was deemed necessary shortly after the race.
The injury reportedly occurred when Aldeguer’s hand struck the tarmac during his slide after crashing at Turn 16.

Difficult Weekend Ends in Disappointment
The Indonesian Grand Prix proved to be a frustrating round for the Gresini rider. Although he qualified sixth on the grid and finished seventh in the Sprint Race, his Grand Prix ended prematurely after another crash.
It was also Aldeguer’s third crash of the weekend, making it a race weekend to forget at a circuit where he famously claimed his maiden MotoGP victory in 2025.
Another Setback in a Challenging Season
The latest injury adds to what has been an unfortunate 2026 campaign for Aldeguer.
Earlier this year, the Spaniard fractured his left femur during a heavy practice crash near Valencia in January. The injury forced him to miss the Sepang and Buriram pre-season tests, as well as the opening round of the season in Thailand, where Ducati test rider Michele Pirro stepped in as his replacement.
In June, Aldeguer suffered another setback after fracturing a vertebra during the Dutch TT at Assen. That injury ruled him out of both the German Grand Prix at Sachsenring and the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, with Iker Lecuona filling in for him at Silverstone.
Australian GP Participation Yet to Be Decided
With the Australian Grand Prix just around the corner, Gresini Racing has yet to announce a recovery timeline or confirm whether Aldeguer will be fit enough to race at Phillip Island.
If the Spaniard is unable to recover in time, the team may once again need to name a replacement rider for the upcoming MotoGP round.
