Kawasaki KLE500 Review: Built for the Journey, Not Just Destination

Kawasaki KLE500 Review: Built for the Journey, Not Just Destination

After covering over 1,000 kilometres, the Kawasaki KLE500 proved that an adventure bike doesn’t need to be intimidating to stand out.

There are motorcycles built for covering long distances in comfort, and there are those designed to venture beyond the tarmac. Then there are motorcycles that aim to combine both into one complete package. One of the latest additions to Malaysia’s growing adventure bike segment is the Kawasaki KLE500.

At first glance, the KLE500 can be a little deceiving. Its tall stance and adventure-focused styling might lead some riders to believe it’s too intimidating to handle, especially off-road. Others may look at its engine capacity and wonder if it has enough performance for long-distance touring.

After spending several days with the motorcycle, however, I can confidently say that it sits comfortably between those two extremes. It never feels too bulky to manage, nor does it leave you wishing for significantly more power.

I had the opportunity to experience the Kawasaki KLE500 during Kawasaki Malaysia’s KLE500 Media Ride, covering over 1,000 kilometres across Peninsular Malaysia which included highways, scenic backroads, winding mountain roads and even several light off-road sections. From riding under the scorching afternoon sun to pushing through heavy rain, the KLE500 was tested in just about every condition you could imagine.

After spending nearly 1,000 kilometres in the saddle, I came away with a much clearer understanding of what the KLE500 is really about. Rather than trying to be the fastest or the most hardcore adventure motorcycle on the market, it focuses on delivering a well-rounded riding experience on almost any road you take it. And honestly, that’s exactly what makes it such an interesting motorcycle.

Kawasaki KLE500 Review

A Friendly Engine That Never Feels Intimidating

Adventure motorcycles don’t always need to produce massive horsepower to be enjoyable, and the Kawasaki KLE500 is a great example of that. Power comes from a 451cc liquid-cooled parallel-twin engine, producing 45 hp at 9,000 rpm and 42.6 Nm of torque at 6,000 rpm, paired with a six-speed gearbox and an Assist & Slipper Clutch.

Those figures may not seem impressive when compared to some larger adventure bikes. However, once you’re in the saddle, you’ll realise that the KLE500 isn’t trying to overwhelm you with brute force. Instead, its power delivery is smooth, predictable and incredibly easy to get along with.

Twist the throttle and the bike responds eagerly, but never in a way that catches you off guard. There’s enough punch to get up to speed quickly when you need to, yet the delivery remains refined enough to make everyday riding feel effortless.

Whether I was overtaking slower traffic or accelerating onto the highway, the KLE500 never felt like it was struggling. It simply built speed in a smooth and confidence-inspiring manner.

It became even more apparent when I was on this ride. Travelling through long uphill sections and sweeping mountain road, I expected the engine to need a little more encouragement. Instead, it climbed through the elevation changes with ease, leaving me free to enjoy the stunning scenery rather than constantly thinking about which gear I should be in.

What I appreciated most was the engine’s versatility. If I wanted to pick up the pace, the KLE500 responded with smooth acceleration. On the other hand, if I wanted to settle into a relaxed cruising rhythm and simply enjoy the journey, it was equally happy to do so. It never felt like the motorcycle was urging me to ride aggressively, it simply adapted to whatever riding style I was in the mood for.

Another factor I like was just how refined the engine felt throughout the three-day ride. Even at highway speeds, I never noticed any intrusive vibrations through the handlebars, footpegs or seat. Even at high speeds, the bike remained stable without any vibrations or wobbles..

The Assist & Slipper Clutch also deserves a mention. Clutch action is incredibly light, making stop-and-go traffic much less of a chore, while gear changes through the six-speed transmission feel slick and positive. After spending hours in the saddle each day, I genuinely appreciated how effortless the drivetrain felt.

Perhaps the biggest surprise was how quickly I adapted to the KLE500. Within the first few hours of the media ride, the bike already felt familiar, allowing me to focus on the roads ahead rather than the motorcycle beneath me.

Fuel economy was equally impressive. Starting with a full tank in Glenmarie, I managed to reach Gua Musang with one fuel bar to spare, which gave me plenty of confidence that the KLE500 is more than capable of tackling long-distance adventures without constantly searching for the next petrol station.

Simple Features That Matter

Adventure motorcycles don’t always need to be packed with complicated technology. Sometimes, the features that matter most are the ones that quietly improve your riding experience, and that is exactly where the Kawasaki KLE500 shines.

Sitting in front of the rider is a digital LCD display, similar to what can be found on the Kawasaki Z500 and Ninja 500, with smartphone connectivity through Kawasaki’s Rideology app. While it may not be as flashy as a full-colour TFT display, it does everything you need it to do. The information is presented clearly, and visibility remains excellent in different riding conditions.

During my time with it, I found the display easy to read even under the bright afternoon sun. At night, the dark background was especially useful as it kept the screen from blinding the eyes during longer rides in low-light conditions.

The bike is equipped with LED headlights and tail lights, providing good visibility whether riding during the day or at night. However, the turn signals, still use traditional halogen bulbs, which is a slightly old-school touch on an otherwise modern adventure motorcycle.

Safety features are also well covered with dual-channel ABS as standard. What makes it even more suitable for adventure riding is the ability to switch off the ABS when needed, especially when venturing off-road. This allows for greater control over the motorcycle, especially when doing some offroad action.

The KLE500 also comes with an adjustable windscreen, which is useful for long-distance riding. However, I found that even at its highest setting, the windscreen still felt slightly short, especially at higher speeds. A taller aftermarket windscreen would definitely do the trick for riders who frequently spend long hours on the highway.

The KLE500’s features may not be the most extravagant in its class, but they are practical and well thought out. Each feature serves a purpose, whether it is improving comfort, safety or making long-distance adventures a little easier. And for an adventure motorcycle, that practicality is exactly what riders are looking for.

Confidence Comes Naturally

One of the biggest questions I had before riding the KLE500 was how it would handle since I had almost no prior experience with an adventure bike before. With its tall stance, 21-inch front wheel and long-travel suspension, I thought it would be quite hard to handle, especially on twisty roads. Fortunately, it didn’t take long for the bike to prove me wrong.

The KLE500 is equipped with a 43 mm upside-down front fork offering 210 mm of suspension travel, while the rear features Kawasaki’s Uni-Trak suspension paired with a preload-adjustable monoshock providing 196 mm of travel. It’s a setup that’s clearly designed with versatility in mind, allowing the bike to feel equally comfortable both on and off road.

Despite its adventure-bike proportions, cornering never felt difficult. I was a little hesitant to lean the bike over during the first few corners, simply because of its height and larger front wheel. However, that uncertainty quickly disappeared. Once I began trusting the chassis, the KLE500 leaned into corners naturally and held its line with plenty of confidence.

What surprised me even more was how easily to flick it from one corner to the next, making mountain roads and flowing backroads genuinely enjoyable. The only time I noticed a slight wobble was when riding over the metal expansion joints found on some bridges, but aside from that, the bike remained composed and reassuringly stable.

Braking performance is handled by a 300 mm single front disc paired with a two-piston caliper, while the rear uses a 230 mm single disc with another two-piston caliper. The setup is complemented by switchable dual-channel Nissin ABS, giving riders the flexibility to leave ABS on for everyday road riding or switch it off when going off road.

During the Media Ride, the braking performance never left me wanting more. The brakes offered good feel at the lever, making it easy to modulate braking force whether I was slowing down for a tight corner or navigating wet roads after heavy rain.

The combination of the 21-inch front wheel wrapped in a 90/90 tyre and the 17-inch rear wheel fitted with a 140/70 tyre also played a significant role in the bike’s confidence-inspiring nature. On the road, they delivered excellent stability, while off the beaten path they rolled over loose gravel, muddy sections and uneven terrain with far less drama than I had anticipated.

That long-travel suspension really came into its own once we entered the off-road sections during the ride. It soaked up ruts, rocks and uneven surfaces remarkably well, allowing me to focus more on choosing the right line rather than worrying about every bump beneath the wheels.

As someone who was relatively new to off-road riding, I genuinely believe the suspension helped make those challenging sections feel far more manageable.

By the end of the three-day ride, one thing became very clear: the KLE500 doesn’t just look like an adventure bike, it genuinely rides like one. Whether carving through mountain roads or tackling muddy trails, it consistently inspired confidence, making it surprisingly approachable for riders stepping into the adventure segment.

One Bike, Two Worlds

Getting on the KLE500 for the first time, the bike immediately felt taller than what I was used to. As someone with relatively long legs, I had no trouble supporting its weight at a standstill, but I can understand why the seat height might seem a little intimidating to riders who are new to the adventure bike segment.

Within the first few kilometres, the KLE500 already felt surprisingly easy to ride. The smooth power delivery and predictable throttle response made adapting to the motorcycle almost effortless. Rather than demanding your full attention, the bike encourages you to relax and simply enjoy the journey.

Throughout the three-day ride, the KLE500 spent some time on the highway, and it was able perform tremendously. Cruising at highway speeds came naturally, and whenever I needed to overtake slower traffic, a twist of the throttle was all it took. The engine always had enough performance in reserve without ever feeling strained, making long-distance touring a genuinely enjoyable experience.

Comfort was another area where the KLE500 impressed me. The upright riding position meant there was very little pressure on my wrists or lower back, even after spending hours in the saddle each day.  By the end of each riding session, I was certainly tired, but it was more from the long hours on the road than from the motorcycle itself. For an adventure bike that’s designed to cover serious distances, that’s exactly what you want.

The weather also gave us the opportunity to see how the KLE500 behaved when conditions weren’t ideal. On the second day of the ride, heavy rain followed us for a good portion of the journey towards Gerik. Visibility was poor, and the roads became noticeably slick, but the bike remained composed throughout. It never felt like the bike wanted to slip or lose grip unexpectedly, which added plenty of confidence when riding in challenging conditions.

Of course, an adventure bike wouldn’t be complete without venturing off the tarmac, and this was where the KLE500 really began to shine. Despite having very little off-road experience beforehand, I never felt overwhelmed by the motorcycle. The standard tyres offered more grip than I expected on muddy trails, while the generous ground clearance allowed the bike to tackle rocky sections and even shallow river crossings without any major concerns.

Naturally, there were moments where the tyres slipped around on the wet dirt, but that’s simply part of riding off-road. Instead of feeling unpredictable, the KLE500 remained easy to control, allowing me to regain my composure and keep moving forward.

Looking back, what impressed me most wasn’t that the KLE500 excelled on the road or off it,it was how effortlessly it transitioned between the two. One moment I was cruising comfortably on the highway, and the next I was navigating muddy trails and river crossings.

By the end of the ride, I felt just as confident riding on tarmac as I did exploring unpaved roads, and I think that’s the greatest compliment I can give the Kawasaki KLE500, being ale to have two characters in one complete package.

Kawasaki KLE500 Review

Verdict

After spending three days and covering over 1,000 kilometres aboard the Kawasaki KLE500, I was genuinely impressed by just how well-rounded this motorcycle is. It isn’t the fastest adventure bike on the market, nor is it the most technologically advanced. Instead, it focuses on getting the fundamentals right, and more importantly, it encourages you to get out and ride.

What makes it stand out is its versatility. It tackled highways, winding mountain roads, village backroads, heavy rain and even muddy off-road trails without ever feeling out of its element. At no point did it feel intimidating or overly demanding, which makes it an excellent option for riders who are looking to step into the adventure bike segment for the first time.

The smooth parallel-twin engine, confidence-inspiring chassis and comfortable upright riding position all work together to create a motorcycle that feels just as happy cruising on the highway as it does exploring roads less travelled.

While there are a few areas that could be improved, such as a taller windscreen for better wind protection, they are relatively minor when compared to what the bike offers as a complete package.

Perhaps the biggest compliment I can give the KLE500 is this: it made me want to keep riding. Every morning, I found myself looking forward to getting back in the saddle, whether the day involved smooth tarmac, twisty mountain roads or slippery off-road trails. Very few motorcycles manage to give you that feeling.

For riders who have always been curious about adventure touring but are worried that these motorcycles might be too tall, too heavy or too intimidating, the Kawasaki KLE500 does an excellent job of proving otherwise. It is approachable, capable and comfortable enough to inspire confidence while still leaving plenty of room for riders to develop their skills.

After over 1,000 kilometres together, one thing became very clear: the Kawasaki KLE500 isn’t simply built to take you from one destination to another. It’s a motorcycle that makes you want to take the longer route home, explore roads you’ve never travelled before and discover places you might otherwise have overlooked. And to me, that’s exactly what an adventure motorcycle should do.
