The 2025 PETRONAS MAM Malaysian Cub Prix Championship kicked off in spectacular fashion today at the PETRONAS Sepang International Circuit (North), with Md Izam Ikmal Izamli of PETRONAS SPRINTA YAMAHA – CKJ RACING delivering a masterclass in defensive riding to win the CP125 category.
The action began with a tightly contested “Shoot-Out” qualifying session that saw Emil Idzhar Ezuan (PETRONAS SPRINTA YAMAHA – CKJ RACING) claim pole position with a blistering 1’23:887s lap, just 0.039s faster than Md Adib Arsyad Md Hisam (PETRONAS SPRINTA YAMAHA MAJU MOTOR). Defending champion Md Syamil Amsyar Md Iffende (PETRONAS SPRINTA YAMAHA – 31 RACING) completed the front row with a 1’23:988s effort.
Race drama unfolded immediately as Syamil stormed into an early lead, only for Izam to seize control by Lap 2. The 19-year-old then faced unrelenting pressure throughout the 10-lap contest, particularly in the closing stages when Md Haziq Md Hamdan (PETRONAS SPRINTA YAMAHA – 31 RACING) and Md Adie Putra Sukarno (PETRONAS SPRINTA YAMAHA MAJU MOTOR) mounted late charges.
In a heart-stopping final lap, Izam first lost then regained the lead with a daring move at Turn 9, eventually crossing the line 0.508s clear of Haziq (11’20:755s), with Adie Putra completing the podium (11’21:115s).
Izam said, “Thank you to my team. The race was very challenging. We saw many riders trying to overtake me from the start, but I just focused on maintaining momentum and pace to stay in front. In the final two laps, I was a little uncertain whether to stay in the lead or settle within the group first.
“I noticed riders from YYPang and 31 Racing attempting to pass me. Alhamdulillah, my pace was good, and I managed to hold onto P1 all the way to the chequered flag,” he added.
The victory marks a significant turnaround for Izam, who finished seventh in last year’s championship.
With the top five finishers separated by just 1.044 seconds, the championship moves to Tangkak next month, poised for an intensely competitive season.
