Md Irfan Haykhal Amidi produced one of the most dramatic finishes of the 2026 MAM Malaysian Cub Prix Championship after snatching victory in the CP150 class at the Sepang International Circuit (South) on Sunday.
The TAB SPORTS SCK Honda Racing rider executed a perfectly timed slipstream pass on the final straight to seal his second victory of the season, capping off an emotional comeback at the circuit where he previously suffered a broken leg.
The race began with teammate Md Helmi Azman leading the field after securing pole position with a Super Pole lap of 1:20.016. Helmi immediately took the early lead, with Md Muzakkir Mohamed of VOGE Racing Team and Ahmad Darwisy Ahmad Sahir from Honda Castrol Power1 Yuzy Racing close behind.
The fast and flowing layout of the Sepang South Circuit created an intense battle throughout the race, with the lead changing hands multiple times as riders fought aggressively for track position.
By the fifth lap, Md Haziq Md Fairues of IDEMITSU Honda YAM Racing briefly moved to the front after setting a lap time of 1:18.938, before coming under pressure from PETRONAS SPRINTA Yamaha-CKJ Racing teammates Asyraff Zaquan Zainal Raif and Ahmad Afif Amran.
The race reached its climax on the final lap as several riders remained in contention for victory. Md Akid Aziz of VOGE Racing Team posted the fastest lap of the race with a 1:18.397, before Kasma Daniel Kasmayudin of PETRONAS SPRINTA Yamaha Maju Motor bettered it with a 1:18.355 on the final lap.
Heading onto the final straight, Muzakkir and Haziq were locked in a fierce battle for the lead. However, Irfan remained patient behind the pair before using the slipstream effect to maximum advantage, overtaking both riders just metres before the finish line.
The Honda rider crossed the line in 14:44.765, narrowly beating Haziq, who finished second in 14:44.795. Muzakkir completed the podium only 0.032 seconds behind the winner with a time of 14:44.797. Nazirul Izzat Md Bahauddin finished fourth, while Azroy Hakeem Anuar rounded out the top five.
The victory carried extra significance for Irfan, who described it as redemption after suffering a broken leg at the same circuit in the past. Speaking after the race, Irfan expressed his gratitude for finally returning to the top step of the podium at Sepang.
“Syukur Alhamdulillah for this incredibly meaningful victory. Managing to clinch the win here at the Sepang Circuit feels like an invaluable blessing, especially after suffering a broken leg on this very same track.”
“Today’s victory is a point of redemption for me after a rather disappointing performance at the LYL International Karting Circuit in the previous round. During LYL, I couldn’t push the machine to its maximum because my physical condition had not fully recovered.”
He added that his recovery had improved significantly ahead of the Sepang round, allowing him to ride more aggressively and compete for victory.
“For this Sepang round, the recovery of my leg showed very positive progress. It gave me the confidence to ride more aggressively and put up a real fight. This success would certainly have been impossible without the hard work of the team crew, who managed to provide the perfect machine setup for me.”
“I also want to express my deepest gratitude to my parents, siblings, and all the fans who never gave up on encouraging me when I was down. I am truly grateful,” he said.
