After years of keeping the iconic YZF-R6 alive exclusively for track use, Yamaha has officially confirmed that the legendary supersport will soon reach the end of the road.
The Japanese manufacturer has announced that the YZF-R6 Race Base Model will return for one final made-to-order production run before production permanently ends. The motorcycle will go on sale in Japan on February 26, 2027, but only customers who place their orders during a limited reservation period will be able to secure one.
The announcement marks the final chapter for one of the most celebrated 600cc sportbikes ever built. Although the road-legal YZF-R6 gradually disappeared from global markets due to increasingly stringent emissions regulations, Yamaha continued producing the Race Base Model for circuit use. Designed specifically for national racing championships, club racers and track-day enthusiasts, the motorcycle has remained a favourite among riders seeking a pure supersport experience.
The final edition continues to be based on the 2020 European-specification YZF-R6, retaining its high-revving 599cc liquid-cooled inline four-cylinder engine. As expected from a modern race machine, it comes equipped with rider aids including traction control and a quickshifter.

Yamaha also confirmed that there are no mechanical updates for this final production run. The Race Base Model continues to use the same front suspension and braking components found on the current YZF-R1 Race Base Model, ensuring the motorcycle remains race-ready straight from the factory.
Orders will be accepted through Yamaha’s authorised competition dealers in Japan across two reservation periods. The first window will run from July 1 to July 31, 2026, followed by a second reservation period between August 1 and August 31, 2026.
Once all confirmed orders have been fulfilled, production of the YZF-R6 Race Base Model will officially come to an end, closing the book on a motorcycle that has defined the supersport category for more than two decades.
The decision reflects the changing landscape of the middleweight performance motorcycle segment. As emissions regulations continue to tighten, manufacturers have increasingly shifted away from traditional high-revving 600cc inline-four machines in favour of larger-capacity twins and triples that deliver stronger mid-range performance while meeting modern environmental standards.
Yamaha itself has already introduced the YZF-R9, powered by its acclaimed CP3 three-cylinder engine, as the spiritual successor to the R6 for the next generation of track riders and supersport enthusiasts.
Despite the arrival of newer models, the YZF-R6 remains one of the most respected motorcycles in modern sportbike history. Since its debut in 1999, it has become the benchmark for the 600cc supersport class, earning countless victories in national and international racing while building a loyal following among racers and enthusiasts worldwide.
For riders who have always dreamed of owning a brand-new Yamaha R6, this final production run represents one last opportunity before one of motorcycling’s greatest supersport icons officially rides into history.
