Maverick Viñales will miss the upcoming Spanish Grand Prix at Circuito de Jerez after a complication related to a previous shoulder surgery forced him to withdraw from competition.
The Spaniard made a precautionary decision to sit out the Austin round of the MotoGP when it was discovered that a screw from an earlier operation had shifted. Although his recovery is progressing well, he will not be fit in time to race on home soil in Jerez.

No Replacement as Espargaró Also Injured
Initial plans had seen KTM reserve rider Pol Espargaró step in for Viñales. However, the Spaniard also suffered a hand injury ahead of the race weekend, ruling him out of contention.
With limited time to secure a competitive replacement, Red Bull KTM Tech3 and KTM have decided to field only one bike for the Spanish Grand Prix.

Bastianini Carries the Team’s Hopes
Despite the setback, the team will still have Enea Bastianini on track. The Italian heads into the Jerez round with growing confidence after securing an impressive third place in the Sprint race in Austin. Bastianini is expected to build on that momentum as the MotoGP season transitions into its European leg.
Focus on Recovery and Long-Term Performance
Viñales expressed disappointment at missing his home race but emphasised that recovery remains the priority.
“It’s obviously disappointing not to be racing at Jerez. It’s a huge event for me, but right now the focus is on recovering properly and coming back in the best condition,” he said, adding that he aims to return at Le Mans.
Team Manager Nicolas Goyon echoed the sentiment, stating that ensuring Viñales’ full recovery is the team’s main concern. He also noted that Espargaró’s injury removed the most logical replacement option.
KTM Motorsport Director Pit Beirer added that running a single bike was the most practical decision under the circumstances, considering both competitiveness and long-term planning.
Looking Ahead
While the Jerez weekend will see a reduced presence from KTM Tech3, the team remains optimistic about Viñales’ recovery and Bastianini’s form heading into the upcoming European rounds. With Le Mans next after Jerez on the calendar, KTM will be aiming to return to full strength as soon as possible
