2025 Kawasaki Z500 SE Review: Familiar Size, Bigger Punch

Kawasaki finally brings a 500cc naked to Malaysia, and it hits the sweet spot for riders upgrading from the lightweight segment.

When Kawasaki announced the arrival of its new 500cc series earlier this year, it definitely turned heads, especially in Malaysia. Launched in May by Motosikal & Enjin Nasional Sdn. Bhd. (MODENAS), a subsidiary of DRB-HICOM, the Kawasaki Z500 SE marks an important milestone. For the first time in a long while, Kawasaki now has a proper 500cc naked sport in the Malaysian lineup, sitting right between the popular 250cc models and the larger 650 series.

As someone who rides the Modenas Z250 ABS on a daily basis, swinging a leg over the Z500 SE immediately felt familiar. The chassis size is practically identical, making the transition almost seamless. What’s different, however, are the updated looks and equipment. The Z500 SE gets a sharper headlamp, redesigned tail light, and an upgraded LCD meter that modernises the cockpit. It still carries the same streetfighter attitude, but with a more refined presence.

Engine and Chasis

The biggest change lies in the engine. Kawasaki developed a brand-new 451cc parallel-twin designed for the light sport segment. Paired with a larger bore and stroke compared to the 250, the engine produces a healthy 44 hp at 9,000 rpm and 42.6 Nm at 6,000 rpm. It’s a simple, efficient platform with no fancy rider modes or traction control like the Z650, but that’s exactly what keeps it lightweight, approachable, and fun. Smartphone connectivity is also included for riders who love easy access to bike data.

Kawasaki designed the Z500 to offer the ideal balance of performance, agility, and everyday comfort. Since the chassis is based on the 250cc model, it carries over the same agility I’ve come to love on my Z250. The telescopic fork, semi-floating 310mm front disc, and dual-channel ABS on both ends feel predictable and confidence-inspiring for city riding. What the Z500 adds is exactly what the Z250 lacked which is more power, smoother acceleration, and the ability to sit comfortably at higher cruising speeds.

Riding Experiences

In daily riding, the Z500 SE felt like the Z250 I always wished I had. All the handling characteristics remained: the nimble steering, easy filtering through traffic, and lightweight feel (just 168kg curb). But now, with the extra torque and horsepower, it finally has the legs to pull confidently on highways and long stretches.

Riding through heavy traffic on Federal Highway and NPE, the bike maintained its composure effortlessly. Filtering through jams was easy thanks to its compact size and light steering, very similar to the Z250, but with more muscle whenever you needed to break free from slow-moving cars. On the NKVE at night, I pushed it further and managed to hit 182 km/h, and even then it felt like it still had more to give. Acceleration from 150 to 170+ km/h was surprisingly quick, showing just how capable this 451cc twin really is.

Final Verdict

Despite the stronger engine, the bike never felt intimidating. Instead, the power delivery is smooth and friendly, making it ideal for new B-Full licence holders while still enjoyable for experienced riders. The Z500 SE fits perfectly into its role as a first “big bike”, strong enough to feel like a meaningful upgrade from a 250cc, but still easy to handle for everyday Malaysian roads.

In short, the 2025 Kawasaki Z500 SE is a joy to ride. It’s simple, sporty, and delivers the perfect mix of agility and real-world power. Kawasaki didn’t overcomplicate it, they just made a bike that works, and works well. For many Malaysian riders, this might just be the ideal next chapter after a 250cc machine.
