In a thrilling race at the Catalan Grand Prix, the Ducati Lenovo Team celebrated a triumphant return to the top step of the podium thanks to an outstanding performance by Francesco Bagnaia. Bagnaia’s victory marked his third race win of the season, solidifying his status as a formidable contender in the championship. Meanwhile, Enea Bastianini crossed the line in ninth place but was relegated to eighteenth after a 32-second penalty for failing to comply with a long-lap penalty.

Bagnaia’s Commanding Performance

Francesco Bagnaia had a flawless start from the front row, quickly establishing himself as a leader in the early laps. His initial strategy focused on preserving tyre life, which proved crucial as the race unfolded. Despite dropping to third place with twelve laps remaining, Bagnaia remained within striking distance of the race leaders.

The turning point came when Pedro Acosta crashed, prompting Bagnaia to intensify his pursuit of the new leader, Jorge Martín. Demonstrating his tenacity and skill, Bagnaia executed a decisive overtake at turn five with less than six laps to go, eventually crossing the finish line with a 1.7-second margin over Martín.

Bastianini’s Frustrating Outcome

Enea Bastianini’s race was less straightforward. Starting strong, he found himself in tenth place after the first chicane but struggled to stay with the leading group. Midway through the race, Bastianini was handed a long-lap penalty for cutting the first chicane—a consequence of avoiding a collision during an overtaking manoeuvre by Alex Márquez. Unfortunately, Bastianini did not serve the penalty during the race, resulting in a 32-second addition to his total race time and an eighteenth-place finish.

Championship Standings and Upcoming Races

With the Catalan Grand Prix concluded, Bagnaia is now second in the championship standings, trailing Martín by 39 points. Bastianini occupies the fourth position, 61 points behind the leader. The Ducati Lenovo Team remains at the top of the team standings with 210 points, while Ducati leads the manufacturer standings with 204 points.

The Ducati Lenovo Team now looks forward to the seventh Grand Prix of the season at their home circuit, Mugello International Circuit, where they hope to capitalize on their momentum.

Post-Race Reflections

Francesco Bagnaia (#1 Ducati Lenovo Team) – 1st Place
“Today’s win was very important, both considering yesterday’s challenges and last year’s results at this track. Initially, I aimed to set a sustainable pace, but as Martín and Acosta passed me, I realized their pace might compromise tyre wear over the full race distance. Once I overtook Jorge, I maintained a solid lead and focused on reaching the finish line without surprises. I’m excited for Mugello and hope to see many fans there.”

Enea Bastianini (#23 Ducati Lenovo Team) – 18th Place
“It was a frustrating race. The long-lap penalty felt unfair as I had no choice but to cut the chicane after Márquez’s manoeuvre. I believe more consideration should be given in such situations. Now, our focus shifts to performing better in the next race.”

Luigi Dall’Igna (Ducati Corse General Manager)
“It was another intense race. These races are thrilling for fans, though exhausting for us due to the tension. After last year’s results, we used this circuit as a test track, which helped improve our bike setup. The team has worked excellently, preparing the riders to perform at their best.”

The Ducati Lenovo Team’s remarkable performance in Catalunya sets a high bar as they head to Mugello, aiming for continued success on their home turf.
