Yamaha has built a strong reputation for producing motorcycles that are both enjoyable to ride and practical enough for everyday use. Two of its most popular 155cc models are the Yamaha XSR155 that recently made its Malaysian debut after countless rumours and the Yamaha MT-15 which has been a fan favorite for quite some time now.

Although they share the same engine and many mechanical components, these motorcycles cater to different types of riders. The Yamaha XSR155 embraces a retro-modern design inspired by Yamaha’s Sport Heritage lineup, while the MT-15 adopts the aggressive “Dark Side of Japan” styling that has made the MT family popular worldwide.

If you’re choosing between these two lightweight motorcycles, here’s a detailed comparison of their engine performance, features, comfort, specifications, and who each bike is best suited for.

Yamaha XSR155 vs. Yamaha MT-15

Engine and Performance

Yamaha XSR155

The XSR155 is powered by a 155cc liquid-cooled, SOHC, single-cylinder engine that comes equipped with Variable Valve Actuation (VVA). It produces approximately 19 hp at 10,000 rpm and 14.7 Nm of torque at 8,500 rpm, paired with a six-speed gearbox and an assist and slipper clutch.

Yamaha MT-15

The MT-15 uses the exact same 155cc VVA engine, delivering identical power and torque figures. Like the XSR155, it offers smooth low-end performance for city riding while maintaining strong power delivery at higher engine speeds thanks to the VVA system.

On the road, performance between the two motorcycles is almost identical. Both accelerate briskly for a 155cc motorcycle, making them enjoyable for urban commuting and spirited weekend rides. Their lightweight chassis also contributes to agile handling and rider confidence.

Ultimately, the biggest difference isn’t the engine—it’s the riding character each motorcycle delivers through its styling and ergonomics.

Features and Technology

Yamaha XSR155

The XSR155 features full LED lighting, a circular fully digital LCD instrument display with Y-Connect, upside-down (USD) front forks, an aluminium swingarm, assist and slipper clutch, and Yamaha’s VVA technology. Its retro styling is complemented by premium touches such as the round headlamp, sculpted fuel tank, and classic-inspired seat design.

Yamaha MT-15

The MT-15 also comes with LED lighting, a fully digital LCD display, USD front forks, aluminium swingarm, assist and slipper clutch, and VVA technology. However, its aggressive bodywork, sharp LED projector headlight, and muscular fuel tank extensions give it a much sportier appearance.

Mechanically, both motorcycles are nearly identical. The decision here comes down to which design philosophy appeals to you more.

Ergonomics and Comfort

Yamaha XSR155

The XSR155 has a seat height of approximately 810 mm and features a relaxed upright riding position. The wide handlebars and flatter seat make it comfortable for daily commuting as well as longer leisure rides. The seating position also makes it easier for riders to enjoy a more casual riding style. With a weight of just 137 kg, it is able to maneuver through traffic easily even though being slightly heavier than the MT-15.

Yamaha MT-15

The MT-15 also has a seat height of around 810 mm, but its slightly more forward-leaning riding position creates a more sportier feel. The handlebars are positioned lower, encouraging a more engaging posture when cornering or riding enthusiastically. With a weight of 133 kg, it is slightly lighter compared to the XSR155.

If comfort is your priority, the XSR155 has a slight advantage. If you prefer a more aggressive riding position, the MT-15 is the better option.

Who Is Each Bike For?

The Yamaha XSR155 is ideal for riders who appreciate timeless styling with modern performance. Its retro-inspired design makes it popular among riders who enjoy customisation, café racer aesthetics, and relaxed weekend rides. It’s also an excellent choice for commuters who want a motorcycle that stands out without sacrificing everyday practicality.

The Yamaha MT-15 is aimed at riders who prefer aggressive styling and a sportier riding experience. Its sharp design, compact dimensions, and nimble handling make it particularly well suited for city riding, younger riders, and those who enjoy spirited cornering on twisty roads.

Final Verdict

Choosing between the Yamaha XSR155 and the Yamaha MT-15 isn’t about performance, they’re almost identical beneath the bodywork. Instead, your decision comes down to personality and riding style.

If you prefer a motorcycle with classic looks, relaxed ergonomics, and strong customisation potential, the Yamaha XSR155 is the better choice. However, if you’re after aggressive styling, sporty ergonomics, and the signature “Dark Side of Japan” look, the Yamaha MT-15 is hard to beat.

Whichever you choose, both motorcycles offer Yamaha’s proven 155cc VVA engine, excellent reliability, fuel efficiency, and an engaging riding experience, making them two of the best options in the lightweight motorcycle segment.
