Kove 450R Review: A Proper Sleeper with an Inline-Four Screamer

Search for Kove online and almost every review focuses on the 450 Rally. That’s fair enough given its impressive Dakar heritage, but it leaves another genuinely fascinating machine sitting in the shadows, the Kove 450R.  

Despite claiming the prestigious Allianz Motorcycle of the Year title (MMOTY 2026) in April, the 450R somehow continues to fly under the radar. Distributed locally by M Dua Motor Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of AFY Mobility Industries (AMI), the bike officially debuted in Malaysia back in October last year.

So, I put the 450R through a comprehensive week-long test, using it for everyday urban commuting before putting its chassis to work on the twisties of Ulu Yam up to Genting Highlands and back down the Karak Highway. The verdict? It is easily one of the most underrated lightweight performance motorcycles in Malaysia right now.

It’s the ultimate “sleeper build”, a bike that blends quietly into traffic until it rockets past you with an inline-four screaming north of 13,000 rpm. 

First Look & Impressions

The first thing that caught me off guard wasn’t the engine, it was the size. In photos, the Kove 450R looks like a full-sized middleweight naked, but standing next to it in person tells a completely different story. It feels remarkably close to a 150cc or 250cc machine. It’s compact, narrow, and completely approachable.

The ergonomics are welcoming right out of the gate. Newer riders or those making a step up in displacement will find it totally non-threatening as it is light on its feet and effortless to hold upright at a standstill. Rather than the wide, flared tank of a Yamaha MT-25, the profile feels more like an MT-15 body shell draped over a sharp, compact 250NK-style frame.

The styling is aggressive without being over the top. Personally, I still prefer the original front end over the 2027 updated version that Kove recently introduced. The new design reminds me a little too much of KTM, especially the split DRLs and the sharp side panels. It almost looks like someone photocopied the Duke’s front fascia. Still, whichever version you prefer, the overall package looks sharp and slick.

Engine & Performance

Let’s cut straight to the headline feature that makes this bike so special, the inline-four powerplant. While several manufacturers, particularly Chinese brands, have begun investing heavily in small-capacity inline-fours, Kove took a distinctly bold path. Introducing the first sub-500cc inline-four naked streetfighter to the Malaysian market was a daring move, but it pays off in sheer personality.

The 450R packs a high-revving inline-four that honestly sounds fantastic. Even with the stock exhaust, it produces that addictive four-cylinder scream that immediately puts a smile on your face. And if you ask me, fitting an aftermarket exhaust would probably make it sound even much much much better. 

Straight-line performance easily backs up the noise. Kove quotes a theoretical top speed of 220 km/h, though most real-world tests settle right around 205 km/h. In my hands, it effortlessly surged to an indicated 203 km/h, which is plenty of pace for a middleweight streetfighter.

Because it carries so little weight, the 450R punches far above its physical size. Opening the throttle brings immediate drive, the midrange torque is surprisingly muscular, snapping into rapid acceleration that quickly pushes you past speed limits if you aren’t paying attention.

Riding Experience

Real-world versatility is where the Kove 450R really stakes its claim. I lived with it like any everyday Malaysian rider would: tackling grueling morning commutes, battling peak-hour traffic, cruising the highways, and tearing up canyon roads over the weekend. It handled every task flawlessly.

Around town, it’s remarkably user-friendly. The lightweight chassis makes filtering through tight urban lanes practically second nature, the only thing is you just have to mind the slightly wide mirror stalks when squeezing between cars.

When the weekend rolled around, I pointed the front wheel toward Genting Highlands via Ulu Yam and that’s where the bike genuinely shone. The synergy between its featherweight frame and screaming inline-four turns corner-carving into pure pleasure. Flicking it through rapid side-to-side transitions takes minimal effort, building your confidence with every bend.

Corner exits were another pleasant surprise. Small-displacement four-cylinders are notorious for feeling hollow at low rpm, but the Kove pulls with unexpected vigor the moment you roll on the gas.

If you like a bit of hooliganism, you’re in luck. Disengage the Traction Control and the front wheel lifts with eager willingness, aided by the bike’s light front end and sharp acceleration. To top it off, Kove even threw in Launch Control, a feature so ridiculously addictive that you’ll find yourself using it far more often than you’d care to admit.

Suspension, Handling & Braking

Throughout my time with the bike, the chassis proved to be a real highlight, inspiring complete confidence at every turn. From sweeping through the twisty road, to weaving through downtown traffic in Bukit Bintang, its flickable nature made direction changes feel effortless.

The stock CST Migra S1 rubber was another pleasant surprise. While I approached them with low expectations, they performed admirably in the real world. They deliver strong dry traction, hold a clean line in corners, and cope well with spirited riding without slipping out of their comfort zone.

During wet-weather commutes, front-end feedback remained dependable, though the rear tire would momentarily lose traction if I got too eager with the throttle on slick surfaces. It’s easily manageable, but worth noting for rainy-day rides.

Slowing things down is equally satisfying thanks to a potent brake setup, while the Traction Control intervenes subtly rather than cutting power harshly. It’s a well-calibrated electronic package that works harmoniously with the bike’s mechanical grip.

Features

Given its price point, the Kove 450R comes remarkably well-equipped. The standout feature is undoubtedly the standard quickshifter, which delivers slick, rapid gear shifts that quickly become addictive when you push the pace. Combined with built-in Launch Control, it raises the bike’s overall tech appeal significantly.

That said, there are a few minor software quirks. The TFT display suffers from a handful of rough English translation errors, though this should be a simple fix via a future firmware update.

The smartphone app connectivity was also hit-or-miss during my testing, likely because the platform is still heavily geared toward the Chinese home market rather than international users. They’re minor annoyances that don’t affect actual riding performance, but they are worth noting for prospective buyers.

Verdict

After spending a full week with the Kove 450R, I genuinely believe this is one of the most underrated motorcycles currently on sale in Malaysia.

It’s lightweight, exceptionally approachable, and that inline-four soundtrack is pure joy. Features like the standard quickshifter and Launch Control bring genuine excitement to every commute, while its compact dimensions mean riders of almost any skill level can hop on. Above all else, it’s just endlessly fun to ride.

At RM33,888, the price tag might cause a few buyers to pause. By comparison, the CFMoto 450NK sits at RM23,888, while the Kawasaki Z500 SE retails for RM30,100. On paper, the Kove commands a premium over both, but it stands as the only motorcycle in this group offering a screaming 450cc inline-four. That engineering distinction alone elevates it into a class of its own.

Having lived with it, the asking price begins to make real sense, though if Kove could position it closer to the RM29,000 mark, it would undoubtedly turn far more heads.

Establishing brand credibility is Kove’s primary battle in Malaysia right now, as buyers take time to warm up to a fresh market player. Yet, one proper ride is all it takes to prove its worth. The 450R is a textbook sleeper build, quietly waiting in the showroom to shock anyone willing to give it a shot.
