WSSP: Roberto Garcia Takes Maiden WorldSSP Win

Garcia secured his first FIM Supersport World Championship victory at Magny-Cours, while Albert Arenas finished second despite racing with a hand injury.

Roberto Garcia secured his maiden FIM Supersport World Championship (WorldSSP) victory in a dramatic restarted Race 2 at the Circuit de Nevers Magny-Cours, while Albert Arenas battled through injury to finish second and extend his championship lead.

The result marked Garcia’s first win in the WorldSSP class, making him the 72nd different winner in the championship’s history. The GMT94 Yamaha rider also became the sixth-youngest winner in WorldSSP and delivered Yamaha its 170th victory in the category.

Arenas, meanwhile, produced one of the standout rides of the weekend. The AS BLU CRU Racing Team rider had to undergo a medical check before Sunday’s race after an incident involving another rider on Saturday left him with a hand injury.

Starting from 13th on the grid, Arenas quickly moved through the field and joined the fight at the front. Saturday’s Race 1 winner, Can Öncü of Pata Yamaha Ten Kate Racing, was also among the frontrunners and took control of the race around the halfway point.

However, the race was interrupted on Lap 11 after Tom Booth-Amos crashed, bringing out the red flag just one lap before the race reached two-thirds distance.

The restart was reduced to just five laps, setting up a short and intense battle between Öncü, Arenas and Garcia, with several Yamaha riders featuring strongly at the front. Öncü appeared to be on course for another victory after taking the lead into the final lap. However, a mistake cost him valuable ground and allowed Garcia to move ahead.

Garcia held on to take the chequered flag and claim his first WorldSSP victory, with Arenas crossing the line second and Öncü settling for fourth. Despite the injury and the points lost on Saturday, Arenas’ second-place finish allowed him to rebuild his championship advantage. The Spaniard now leads the overall standings by 70 points, with Öncü remaining third.

The WorldSSP championship will now head to Italy for the next round at the Cremona Circuit from 25-27 September, where the title battle will continue.
