Electric motorcycles or EV bikes are gaining more attention in Malaysia, in line with the global shift towards more environmentally friendly vehicles. Many brands in Malaysia have started introducing EV models with various modern features that attract consumers.

However, despite looking like the future of the automotive industry, many are still wondering whether EV bikes are really suitable for everyday use in Malaysia. Are Malaysians really ready to make the switch? In order to answer that question, it’s important to understand the pros and cons first before making a decision.

Advantages of EV Bikes in Malaysia

Lower Operating Costs

One of the main advantages of an EV bike is its lower operating costs compared to petrol motorcycles. You no longer have to rely on the ever-changing price of fuel, instead you only need to charge the battery with much cheaper electricity costs.

In the long run, this can provide significant savings, especially for those who use motorcycles every day to commute to work.

Environmentally Friendly and Less Pollution

EV bikes do not produce exhaust fumes, making them a more environmentally friendly option. This helps to reduce air pollution, especially in urban areas with high traffic. With increasing awareness of environmental issues, the use of EVs is also seen as a step towards a more sustainable lifestyle.

Compared to regular motorcycles, EV bikes operate more quietly. This provides a more comfortable and relaxing riding experience, especially in urban areas.

Apart from that, the power delivery of EV motorcycles is also smoother without gears, making the ride smoother and easier to control, especially for beginners.

Simplified Maintenance

EV bikes have fewer moving components than the conventional internal combustion engines. This means there are fewer components that needs to be serviced, such as engine oil or spark plugs. As a result, overall maintenance costs can be lower and don’t need to be done as often.

Lack of EV Bikes in Malaysia

Charging Infrastructure Still Limited

One of the biggest challenges for EV bikes in Malaysia is the lack of charging stations. Not all areas have this facility, especially in rural areas, and not everyone can afford to install a charging port in their home. Not only that, sometimes riders have to wait in line in order to charge their bikes. This can be a problem for riders who don’t have easy access to charging points, or who often travel long distances.

Limited Travel Distance

Compared to petrol motorcycles, EV bikes typically have a more limited range on a full charge. This can cause “range anxiety” for users, especially for riders who have to travel long distances every day. Despite improvements in battery technology, this issue is still a major concern for many users.

Relatively High Starting Price

Most EV bikes on the market today are priced at a higher price than petrol bikes in the same category. This may be a barrier for those on a tight budget. Although the operating costs are lower in the long run, the high initial investment still needs to be taken into account.

Long Charging Time

Unlike filling up with gas, which only takes a few minutes, charging an EV bike can take longer depending on the type of charger and battery capacity. This can be a problem for riders who need their vehicle to be ready to use at all times.

EV bikes offer many advantages in terms of cost savings, comfort, and environmental friendliness. However, they also have some disadvantages that need to be considered, especially in terms of infrastructure and travel distance.

Overall, EV bikes are suitable for daily use in the city, but may not be practical for long-distance travel at the moment. The best choice depends on the lifestyle and needs of each rider. If these problems can be solved, there is potential for EV Bikes to dominate the Malaysian motorcycle market.
