Yamaha is set to release the 2025 R1 Race, a high-performance motorcycle dedicated entirely to the racetrack. Launching in Europe this November, the new model continues Yamaha’s legacy of innovation, featuring cutting-edge technology like aerodynamic wings, upgraded KYB suspension, advanced Brembo brakes, and an enhanced electronics suite.

The Yamaha R1 has been a superbike icon since its debut in 1998. In 2015, the introduction of the Crossplane 4 inline engine and MotoGP-style electronics solidified the R1’s reputation as a performance leader. Now, the R1 Race advances that legacy with MotoGP-inspired winglets and other track-specific enhancements.

A New Era for Yamaha Racing

The release of the R1 Race signals Yamaha’s ongoing commitment to motorsport, even as it phases out the road-going R1 model in 2025, except for the U.S. market. While the R1 Race shares much of its architecture with the current R1, it’s designed specifically for racing.

Despite retaining its 998cc CP4 engine with 197bhp, the R1 Race may not completely address Yamaha’s current challenges in WorldSBK, where rivals such as the 2025 Ducati Panigale V4 deliver 230bhp in stock trim. There are also rumours circulating that Yamaha might be considering a shift to V4 engine specifications in the near future.

Track-Focused Features

MotoGP-Style Winglets

The R1 Race features MotoGP-derived aerodynamic winglets on its fairing, made from lightweight carbon fibre. These winglets boost downforce, enhancing front-end stability and complementing the bike’s anti-wheelie electronics. They offer improved handling during braking and cornering, bringing the R1 Race closer to a MotoGP experience.

Upgraded KYB Suspension

Equipped with a new 43mm KYB inverted front fork, the R1 Race allows riders to adjust rebound and compression damping independently on the right and left fork tubes. The upgraded suspension improves grip, stability, and handling. The forks also feature a new Kashima coating, delivering not only performance benefits but also a sleek gold/bronze aesthetic.

Advanced Brembo Braking System

To enhance the R1 Race’s braking capabilities, Yamaha has fitted it with a new Brembo system that includes a radial master cylinder and Stylema monobloc calipers. These brakes offer increased stopping power and better consistency, reducing brake fade during intense track sessions.

Proven CP4 Engine with Advanced Electronics

At the heart of the R1 Race is Yamaha’s renowned 998cc CP4 engine, delivering linear torque and race-derived performance. Combined with the Yamaha Chip Controlled Throttle (YCC-T) and the Accelerator Position Sensor Grip (APSG), the R1 Race provides a refined throttle response. Its advanced electronics package includes Traction Control, Slide Control, Brake Control, and Lift Control, making the bike both powerful and manageable for track use.

A New Chapter in Supersport Racing

With tightening emissions regulations (Euro5), the European motorcycle market has shifted toward track-only machines, and the 2025 Yamaha R1 Race embodies this transition. Inspired by the YZR-M1 MotoGP bike, the R1 Race is designed to provide racers and enthusiasts with an unparalleled track experience.

Although Yamaha has faced challenges in the 2024 WorldSBK season, the R1 Race is a symbol of the brand’s relentless pursuit of performance and innovation. While the road-going R1 may be approaching its end, Yamaha’s racing spirit continues to thrive through this new track-focused machine.
