The long-awaited moment has arrived! Yamaha has officially unveiled the full-production YZF-R9 supersport bike for 2025, packed with high-tech features and aggressive winglets. The new R9 is now positioned at the top of Yamaha’s road-legal sports bike line-up in Europe after the R1 transitioned to track-only use across the continent.

The new R9 receives a host of upgrades that set it apart from others, transforming it into a track-ready weapon as well as a road-going powerhouse. Let’s take a look at this magnificent machine.

YZF R9

Engine & Performance

Yamaha stated that the R9 is powered by a familiar 890cc three-cylinder CP3 engine, the same as the MT-09. However, it features different ECU settings and taller gearing (16/45 compared to the MT-09’s 16/43), giving it a more focused performance edge. The engine delivers 118hp at 10,000rpm and 93Nm of torque at 7,000rpm, maintaining the punchy character Yamaha’s CP3 platform is known for.

Frame & Weight

The R9’s frame, though similar to that of other CP3 models, has been fine-tuned for improved rigidity. Yamaha has worked on the Deltabox-style frame to make it stiffer in torsional, longitudinal, and lateral directions, enhancing feedback, comfort, and handling. The R9 also boasts the lightest frame ever used on a Yamaha supersport model, weighing just 9.7kg. Overall, the R9 tips the scales at 195kg (wet).

Suspension

The bike features a 43mm KYB upside-down front fork that’s unique to the R9, with Kashima-coated fork tubes. Each fork leg offers individual adjusters—rebound on the right and compression (both high and low-speed) on the left. The suspension also incorporates new base valves to improve damping response and stability.

At the rear, the KYB shock is adjustable for preload, rebound, and compression damping. Together, these suspension components provide the R9 with a setup capable of handling both road and track scenarios.

YZF R9

Brakes

The braking system is another area where the R9 shines. Equipped with Brembo’s high-end Stylema callipers, braided steel brake lines, and a premium Brembo master cylinder, the R9’s braking setup offers top-tier stopping power.

It also features 320mm discs (compared to the 298mm ones found on the MT-09), ensuring exceptional braking performance. While ABS is standard, only the rear ABS can be turned off for those who prefer more control on the track.

Electronics

The R9 takes a leap forward in electronics, distancing itself from the rest of the CP3 lineup. It comes with Yamaha’s standard riding modes—Rain, Street, and Sport—alongside two Custom modes and four track-focused settings. This allows riders to fine-tune settings like power delivery, traction control, lift control, slide control, brake control, and engine braking, making the bike adaptable for various track conditions.

In addition to a quick-shifter, the R9 also boasts a launch control system for smooth, fast starts. A standout feature is Yamaha’s Telemetry Recording and Analysis Controller (Y-TRAC), which logs and analyzes riding data, providing detailed feedback. The system links to the rider’s smartphone via Bluetooth, enabling integrated navigation, music, and phone call functions.

YZF R9

Design & Aerodynamics

Visually, the R9 draws inspiration from Yamaha’s legendary supersport lineup. Its front nose takes cues from the R6 and R3, with LED light strips framing a central R7-inspired headlight. The winglets, a must-have for modern sportbikes, are not just for show—they are fully functional and aid in aerodynamics. The tail section resembles the R6, and the overall design is the most aerodynamic Yamaha has ever offered.

Ergonomically, the R9 strikes a balance between track focus and street usability. The clip-on bars are positioned for a sporty ride, similar to the R1, while the pegs and seat offer adjustability for rider comfort.

Availability

According to Yamaha, the 2025 YZF-R9 is expected to arrive in European dealerships in March 2025. It will be available in three striking colour options: Team Yamaha Blue, Matte Raven Black, and Intensity White/Redline.

With its cutting-edge features, stunning looks, and track-ready capabilities, the Yamaha R9 promises to be a game-changer in the supersport segment. What are your thoughts on this incredible machine?
