Mesh vs Leather Riding Jackets: Which Is Better?

Mesh vs Leather Riding Jackets: Which Is Better?

Both mesh and leather riding jackets offer their own advantages. Here’s how to choose the one that best suits your riding style and Malaysia’s weather.

A motorcycle jacket is one of the most important pieces of riding gear you can own. Besides protecting you from the wind and weather, a good riding jacket can significantly reduce the risk of injury in the event of an accident. However, one question many riders ask before buying their first jacket is: Should I choose a mesh jacket or a leather jacket?

The truth is, neither option is universally better than the other. Both have their own strengths and weaknesses, and the right choice depends on where you ride, how often you ride and what you value most. Here’s a closer look at the differences.

1. Ventilation and Comfort

When it comes to airflow, mesh jackets clearly have the upper hand. Designed with large mesh panels, they allow air to flow through the jacket, helping riders stay cooler during hot weather.

This makes mesh jackets particularly suitable for Malaysia’s tropical climate, where temperatures often exceed 30°C. Riders who commute daily or spend long periods in traffic will likely appreciate the extra ventilation.

Leather jackets, while comfortable in cooler weather, tend to trap more heat. They can become quite warm during slow-moving traffic or under the afternoon sun, especially if they don’t have ventilation zippers.

2. Protection

Leather has long been considered one of the best materials for motorcycle gear due to its excellent abrasion resistance. In the event of a slide, quality leather generally provides outstanding durability, which is why it’s still the preferred choice for many sport riders and racers.

That said, modern mesh jackets have come a long way. Many are reinforced with abrasion-resistant materials in high-impact areas and include CE-certified armour for the shoulders, elbows and back. While they may not match premium leather in abrasion resistance, they still provide a high level of protection for everyday riding.

3. Weather Conditions

Think about the weather you ride in most often. Mesh jackets are ideal for hot, dry conditions thanks to their excellent airflow. However, during heavy rain, they offer little protection unless paired with a waterproof outer layer.

Leather jackets naturally block the wind better and can handle light rain for short periods, although they are not waterproof. Once soaked, leather can become heavy and requires proper care to maintain its condition.

4. Riding Style

Your riding style should also influence your riding jacket decision. If you mainly use your motorcycle for daily commuting, weekend café rides or city riding, a mesh jacket is likely to be the more practical choice. It offers excellent comfort without compromising too much on protection.

If you enjoy spirited rides, touring at higher speeds or even occasional track days, a leather jacket may be the better investment thanks to its superior abrasion resistance and snug fit.

5. Maintenance and Longevity

Leather jackets require more attention to keep them looking their best. They should be cleaned properly and conditioned occasionally to prevent the material from drying out or cracking over time.

Mesh jackets are generally easier to maintain. Most can be cleaned with mild soap and water, while some even have removable liners that make washing more convenient. For riders who use their motorcycle every day, this lower maintenance requirement can be a significant advantage.

So, Which One Should You Buy?

For most Malaysian riders, a mesh riding jacket is the more practical option. The airflow makes daily commuting much more comfortable, especially in our hot and humid climate. Modern mesh jackets also offer excellent protection when equipped with certified armour and quality construction.

However, if maximum abrasion resistance is your priority, or you regularly ride long distances at highway speeds, a leather jacket remains an excellent choice. It offers outstanding durability and timeless styling, although you’ll need to accept the extra warmth and maintenance that comes with it.

Conclusion

Choosing between a mesh and leather riding jacket isn’t about deciding which one is better overall, it’s about deciding which one is better for you.

If comfort and ventilation are your priorities, especially for everyday riding in Malaysia, a mesh jacket is hard to beat. If you’re after maximum protection and don’t mind a little extra weight and heat, a leather jacket is still one of the best options available.

Whichever you choose, make sure the jacket fits properly and includes quality protective armour. After all, the best riding jacket is the one you’ll wear every time you get on your motorcycle.
