Getting your motorcycle stolen is a situation that no motorcycle owner wants. Whether it’s stolen in a parking lot, in front of your house, or when you leave it unattended for a while, you will definitely start to panic when you realise your motorcycle is gone.

In a situation like this, many people are unsure of what to do. Some continue to try and find the motorcycle, while others don’t know whether to contact the police or the insurance company first.

If your motorcycle goes missing, don’t panic. Taking the right steps may help ease the investigation process and speed up the insurance claim process if your policy covers loss due to theft.

1. Make Sure It Is Really Missing

Before filing a police report, try to stay calm and make sure your motorcycle is really missing. Sometimes it may be moved without your knowledge. If the motorcycle is parked in a shopping mall, office or public area, try to look for it at every level of the parking lot or ask the management if your motorcycle has been moved.

Try to remember where you last parked your motorcycle. Although it may seem trivial, this step can prevent from making a report when the motorcycle is actually still within the area. If your motorcycle still cannot be found, you can continue with the next step.

2. File a Police Report Immediately

Filing a police report is the most crucial step if your motorcycle has indeed been stolen. When filing a report, try to provide complete information such as the plate number, motorbike model, colour, chassis number if you remember, location of the incident, estimated time it was stolen and any other information that may help with the investigation.

If the area has CCTV cameras, try to obtain the footage and give to the police. CCTV footage may be able to help identify what happened and speed up the investigation. The sooner a report is made, the sooner the authorities can begin their investigation.

3. Contact the Insurance Company

After filing a police report, don’t wait any longer to contact your insurance company or agent. They will explain the claim procedure and the documents required.

Some insurance companies also have a specific period for policy holders to report an incident, so acting quickly can help to avoid any delays in the claim process. If you’re not sure what type of coverage you currently have, now is the time to check whether if your policy covers loss due to theft.

4. Prepare All Required Documents

Once the claim process begins, make sure you have all the documents ready. In addition to the police report, the insurance company may ask for a copy of your identification card, motorcycle grant or registration information, a copy of your insurance policy and other relevant documents. Keeping all your documents in one place will make the review process easier and reduce the risk of delays.

5. Monitor The Case Progress

After all reports and documents have been submitted, you need to give the police and insurance company some time to conduct their investigation and review.

If there is a request for additional information, provide your full cooperation so that the process can proceed without any problems. Avoid making any changes to the information provided and keep copies of all documents for future reference.

Does All Insurance Cover Theft?

This is one of the things that some motorcycle owners misunderstand. Many people assume that all insurance policies will pay compensation if their motorcycle is stolen. In fact, the coverage depends on the type of policy you have.

Generally, coverage for loss due to theft is more commonly offered through comprehensive insurance (First Party Insurance). If you only have Third Party Insurance, loss of your motorcycle due to theft is often not covered. Therefore, understanding your insurance policy before an incident occurs is very important.

How to Reduce the Risk of Theft?

Although there is no way to guarantee that a motorcycle will not get stolen, there are several preventive measures that can help to reduce the risk.

Always park your motorcycle in a well-lit, busy area with a security system. If possible, use a disc lock, chain or alarm to make it more difficult to steal. Also, avoid leaving the keys on your motorcycle, even for a short time. If your motorbike has a GPS tracking system, make sure it is always active so that the motorcycle’s location can be easily tracked in the event of being stolen.

Things to Avoid From Doing After Getting Your Motorcycle Stolen

Many motorcycle owners tend to overreact when they realize their motorcycle is missing. While it is normal to feel panicked, there are some things that should be avoided from doing. Do not make accusations against any individual without solid evidence.

Avoid spreading unverified information on social media as it could interfere with the investigation. Focus on taking the right action such as filing a police report, contacting the insurance company and keeping all relevant documents.

Conclusion

Losing your motorcycle can be a stressful experience, but knowing what steps to take can help you deal with the situation more calmly. Filing a police report immediately, informing your insurance company and providing complete documentation are some of the steps that need to be taken.
