2027 Suzuki SV650 to Return to Europe with SV-7GX Engine

The iconic Suzuki SV650 is set to continue into the 2027 model year with a significant update, including a new version of the 645cc V-Twin engine first introduced on the Suzuki SV-7GX.

Accordig to Motorcycle.com, the SV650 remains part of Suzuki’s US lineup for 2026, although the model was discontinued in Europe following the introduction of stricter Euro5+ emissions standards. With the upcoming update, the SV650 is expected to return to the European market while continuing its long-running presence in the US for at least another generation.

The confirmation comes from an executive order issued by the California Air Resources Board (CARB), which adds the new SV650 to the SV-7GX’s certification.

New Engine and Updated Emissions System

The CARB document identifies the new motorcycle with the model code SV650RQM7, which differs from the 2026 SV650’s SV650AM6 designation.

Suzuki’s model codes typically use the final letter and number to identify the model year, with “M7” indicating 2027. Meanwhile, the “RQ” designation has been used for Suzuki street models equipped with the brand’s newer-generation engines. The GSX-8S, for example, debuted in 2023 with the model code GSX800RQM3.

The SV650’s addition to the SV-7GX certification also confirms that the updated motorcycle will use the same engine and emissions-control systems as the GX, including a second O2 sensor and a new catalyst.

The 645cc V-Twin engine itself will therefore receive the updates required to meet newer emissions standards while retaining the SV650’s familiar engine configuration.

More Modern Electronics

Beyond the engine update, the new SV650 is expected to gain several electronic features already available on the SV-7GX. These could include a ride-by-wire throttle and selectable riding modes, along with modern rider aids such as traction control and a bi-directional quickshifter.

The SV-7GX’s 4.2-inch TFT display is also expected to feature on the updated SV650, giving the motorcycle a more modern cockpit compared with the current model. However, the CARB executive order does not reveal whether Suzuki has made any significant changes to the SV650’s styling or chassis.

Will Suzuki Keep the Familiar Design?

That could be an important consideration for Suzuki, given the SV650’s long-running identity. When Suzuki replaced the SV650 with the Gladius in 2006, the motorcycle received a sleeker and curvier design that proved polarising among riders. While the change in styling attracted criticism, the decision to move away from the SV650 name also contributed to the reaction.

For the upcoming model, Suzuki may therefore choose to retain much of the SV650’s familiar design rather than make another dramatic styling change.

More details will have to wait for Suzuki’s official announcement, but the 2027 Suzuki SV650 is expected to make its debut at EICMA in November.
