Scooters have always been known for one main purpose: making riding as easy and accessible as possible. Unlike conventional motorcycles, riders do not have to worry about constantly changing gears, making them an excellent choice for daily commuting, especially in busy city environments. Their practicality, ease of use and comfortable riding position have made scooters a popular choice among riders around the world.

When talking about scooters, one brand that has truly dominated the scene for decades is Vespa. With a history that dates back to 1946, Vespa has become more than just a motorcycle brand, it has become a symbol of Italian style, design and lifestyle. From its iconic step-through frame to its timeless styling,  Vespa has managed to create a strong identity that separates it from other scooter manufacturers. It is a brand that people don’t just buy for transportation, but also for the experience and character that comes with owning one.

I recently had the opportunity to spend some time with one of Vespa’s popular models, the 2013 Vespa LX 150. At first, I was curious to understand why so many riders are passionate about these Italian scooters, especially when there are plenty of more practical alternatives available in the market.

However, after spending time with the LX 150, I started to understand the appeal. It is not just about getting from one place to another, it is about the feeling, the style and the experience that comes with riding a Vespa.

Engine & Transmission

Powering the LX 150 is a 150cc air-cooled, four-stroke single-cylinder SOHC engine with a three-valve configuration. It produces 11.8 hp at 8,000 rpm and 11.5 Nm of torque at 8,000 rpm. While these figures may not seem impressive compared to modern scooters or motorcycles, the LX 150 was never designed to be a performance machine. Instead, it focuses on delivering a smooth, effortless and enjoyable riding experience for everyday use.

The moment I twist the throttle, the first thing I noticed is just how smooth the power delivery feels. The engine responds in a predictable and relaxed manner, making it very easy to ride whether you are navigating through busy city streets or cruising around town. It does not give you an aggressive surge of acceleration, but it provides more than enough power to comfortably handle daily commutes, errands and casual rides.

Power is transferred to the rear wheel through an automatic CVT transmission, which perfectly matches the character of the LX 150. There is no need to worry about clutch control or constantly shifting gears, allowing the rider to focus more on enjoying the journey.

The smooth operation of the CVT system also helps provide a more comfortable riding experience. Combined with its modest engine output, the LX 150 is also a fuel-efficient scooter, making it a practical choice for riders who want something stylish, easy to use and economical for everyday riding.

Design & Features

The biggest attraction of the Vespa LX 150 is undoubtedly its design. Unlike many modern scooters that focus on sharp lines and aggressive styling, the LX 150 takes a completely different approach.

It embraces Vespa’s timeless Italian design language with smooth body lines, elegant curves and a classic retro-modern appearance that still looks stylish even after more than a decade. It is the kind of motorcycle that does not need to follow trends because its design has already become iconic.

One thing that makes the LX 150 stand out is how unique its character feels. The design is not aggressive or attention-seeking, but instead focuses on elegance and simplicity. The rounded headlight, curved front end and flowing bodywork give it a charming appearance that immediately separates it from other scooters on the road. Combined with the chrome accents found throughout the scooter, the LX 150 carries a premium and sophisticated look that reflects its Italian heritage.

Despite its classic styling, the LX 150 still comes with features that make it practical for everyday use. The analog speedometer keeps things simple and matches the scooter’s vintage-inspired theme, while the under-seat storage provides additional convenience for carrying small personal items.

The seat is also another highlight, offering a comfortable riding position for both the rider and passenger. Whether you are using it for daily commuting or a casual weekend ride, the LX 150 manages to combine style, comfort and practicality into one attractive package.

Riding Experience

The moment I sat on the Vespa LX 150, the first thing I noticed was how relaxed the riding position felt. Unlike motorcycles that put the rider in a more aggressive or forward-leaning posture, the LX 150 offers an upright seating position that feels natural and comfortable. It gives you the feeling of simply hopping on and enjoying the ride rather than having to prepare yourself for a serious riding experience.

For taller riders, the LX 150 may feel slightly more compact compared to larger scooters, but it never feels uncomfortable or overly small. The riding position remains natural, and the scooter still provides enough room to feel comfortable during daily rides.

Thanks to its lightweight nature and low seat height, the LX 150 is incredibly easy to handle. Maneuvering through tight spaces, making U-turns or parking the scooter requires very little effort, making it an excellent choice for beginners or riders who want something simple and stress-free. The confidence it provides is one of its biggest strengths, especially when riding in busy environments.

Riding through Kuala Lumpur traffic with the LX 150 was surprisingly enjoyable. Its compact size makes filtering through congested roads feel effortless, allowing you to move through traffic without feeling overwhelmed.

The smooth power delivery and automatic transmission also add to the relaxed riding experience, allowing you to focus more on enjoying the journey rather than constantly managing the motorcycle. Overall, the LX 150 delivers exactly what a scooter should offer, a simple, enjoyable and stress-free riding experience.

Handling & Braking

Despite its compact size and smaller wheels, the Vespa LX 150 offers a surprisingly agile and enjoyable handling experience. The scooter runs on a 110/70-11 inch front tyre and a 120/70-10 inch rear tyre, which contribute to its lightweight and nimble characteristics.

While smaller wheels may not provide the same stability as larger motorcycles at higher speeds, they work perfectly for what the LX 150 was designed for, easy, relaxing and effortless city riding.

One of the biggest advantages of the LX 150 is how easy it is to maneuver. The scooter feels natural when navigating through tight streets, making quick direction changes and weaving through traffic feel effortless. Its small turning radius is also a huge benefit, especially when making U-turns, squeezing into tight parking spaces or navigating through crowded urban areas. For riders who spend most of their time in the city, this level of practicality is something that is difficult to overlook.

Suspension duties are handled by a single-sided trailing link front suspension with a hydraulic shock absorber, while the rear uses a hydraulic shock absorber with a coil spring setup. This combination is well suited for everyday riding, providing enough comfort to handle the imperfections commonly found on Malaysian roads. It keeps the scooter feeling composed while maintaining the comfortable riding experience that Vespa is known for.

For braking, the LX 150 comes equipped with a 220 mm front disc brake and a 110 mm rear drum brake. While it may not have the advanced braking technology found on modern scooters, the setup is more than adequate for the scooter’s performance and intended use. The braking response feels predictable and sufficient for city riding, giving riders confidence when navigating through traffic or dealing with sudden stops.

Verdict

After spending time with the Vespa LX 150, I can finally understand why so many riders are passionate about Vespa. On paper, it may not have the biggest engine, the most advanced features or the highest performance figures compared to modern scooters.

However, that is never really the main reason people choose a Vespa. It is about the experience, the character and the connection you feel when riding one. Priced at around RM4,000 – RM8,000 on the used market, the Vespa LX 150 remains a very attractive option for riders who are looking for something different.

Its timeless Italian styling means it still looks elegant even after more than a decade, while its iconic design ensures it does not easily blend into the crowd. There are plenty of scooters that can get you from point A to point B, but very few can provide the same sense of style and personality as a Vespa.

Beyond just being a means of transportation, owning a Vespa feels like becoming part of a long-standing heritage. From the classic design language to the enjoyable riding experience, every detail contributes to the charm that has made Vespa one of the most recognisable scooter brands in the world. It is a scooter that people buy not only because they need one, but because they genuinely want one.

After riding the LX 150, I can say that I quite understand the hype behind Vespa. It may not be the most practical scooter in every aspect, but it offers something that many motorcycles struggle to deliver, a sense of personality, style and enjoyment every time you ride it.
