Google has announced a major update for Waze, introducing a suite of Gemini AI-powered features designed to make navigation smarter, more personalised and safer for drivers and motorcyclists. Among the biggest additions is a dedicated Motorcycle Mode, which is now available in Malaysia on both Android and iOS devices.
The latest update aims to improve the riding experience by combining artificial intelligence with real-time navigation, offering routes that are better suited to two-wheelers while making it easier for users to interact with the app using natural voice commands.
Dedicated Motorcycle Navigation Arrives
One of the standout additions is the new Motorcycle Mode, which uses AI to generate routes specifically designed for motorcycles.
Unlike standard navigation, the feature takes road restrictions and motorcycle accessibility into account, while also providing more accurate estimated travel times for riders.
The system can also alert users to road hazards that are particularly important for motorcyclists, including potholes, speed bumps and narrow bridges, helping riders plan safer journeys. Malaysia is among the first countries to receive the feature as part of its initial rollout.
Report Traffic Using Natural Conversation
Waze has also introduced Conversational Reporting, allowing users to report road incidents simply by speaking naturally to the app.
Instead of manually selecting categories, users can describe situations such as traffic congestion, road closures or incorrect map information through voice commands. These reports are then sent to Waze’s local map editors for verification before being published for other users.
Gemini AI Enhances Voice Search
Another upcoming feature is Gemini-powered voice search, enabling drivers to search for destinations without touching their phones.
For example, users can simply say, “Find a coffee shop that’s open,” and Waze will locate nearby options before immediately starting navigation. The feature is currently limited to beta users, with Google yet to announce a global release date.
Smarter Route Recommendations
Artificial intelligence will also help Waze better understand users’ driving preferences and local traffic conditions. The app will learn from previous trips and city traffic patterns to recommend more suitable routes. For example, users who frequently prefer highways over urban roads with multiple traffic lights may automatically receive highway routes as their primary recommendation.
Less Chatty Navigation
Google is also introducing Less Chatty Mode, designed for users who prefer fewer voice interruptions during their journey. The simplified guidance reduces unnecessary navigation prompts while continuing to provide important alerts such as upcoming lane changes, road hazards and potholes.
The feature is currently rolling out globally and is expected to benefit riders and drivers who enjoy listening to music or podcasts while travelling.
With the addition of Gemini AI and motorcycle-specific navigation, Waze continues expanding beyond traditional GPS functionality by offering a more intelligent and personalized navigation experience. For Malaysian motorcyclists, the arrival of Motorcycle Mode is likely to be one of the most practical updates yet, providing routes and safety alerts specifically tailored to life on two wheels.
