Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP Endures Tough Thai GP Opener in Blistering Buriram Heat

Quartararo and Rins secure valuable points in extreme Buriram heat as Yamaha continues development of its 2026 MotoGP project.

The Grand Prix of Thailand proved to be a demanding start to the 2026 MotoGP season for Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP, as extreme heat and humidity at Buriram tested both riders and machinery. Fabio Quartararo and Álex Rins completed the physically punishing 26-lap race in 14th and 15th place respectively.

Held under sweltering conditions, the season opener quickly turned into a race of endurance. While outright pace was difficult to extract, both Yamaha riders showed determination to bring their bikes home and collect valuable championship points.

Quartararo battles through early pressure

Starting from P16, Fabio Quartararo made an immediate gain on the opening lap. However, progress through the field proved challenging, with limited opportunities to move forward.

Midway through the race, the Frenchman came under pressure from Franco Morbidelli and Enea Bastianini, slipping back to 17th position by lap 10. Despite the setbacks, “El Diablo” maintained consistency and capitalised on three late retirements ahead of him to secure 14th place at the chequered flag. The result places Quartararo 16th in the championship standings with two points after Round 1.

Rins manages tyres in demanding conditions

Álex Rins, who launched from P18, crossed the line in P16 on the opening lap, closely following his teammate. For much of the race, Rins found himself in close battles with fellow Yamaha riders as tyre management became a critical factor in the intense heat.

Like Quartararo, Rins benefitted from late race attrition among competitors and ultimately secured 15th place. He now sits 17th in the riders’ championship standings with one point.

Following the Thai GP, Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP occupy ninth place in the team standings with three points, while Yamaha ranks fifth in the constructors’ championship with two points.

Team reflects on difficult season opener

Team Director Massimo Meregalli acknowledged the difficulty of the race and highlighted the learning curve associated with the current project.

“As expected, today’s Race was hugely challenging for us,” said Meregalli. “The heat and humidity made the 26 laps a real test of endurance and an important benchmark for this brand-new project. We are still early in the process, but we are learning about the bike lap by lap.”

He added that tyre allocation and circuit characteristics in extreme temperatures added further complexity. The team will now analyse the data gathered in Thailand to better prepare for the next round.

Quartararo described the outcome as largely in line with expectations. “It was a tough race, but a bit of what we expected. Hopefully in Brazil we will feel better with the bike,” he commented.

Rins echoed the sentiment, saying: “It was a really tough race, and managing the tyres was very difficult. I gave my 100% on every lap. We leave Thailand with some good conclusions. Let’s keep growing this project. I’m looking forward to Brazil.”

Focus shifts to Brazil

Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP now have a two-week break before heading to Brazil for Round 2 of the championship. The next race will take place at the Autódromo Internacional de Goiânia – Ayrton Senna from 20–22 March, where the team hopes to build momentum and make further progress.

Despite a challenging start in Thailand, Yamaha remain focused on development and improvement as the 2026 MotoGP season gathers pace.
