The GYTR GRT Yamaha WorldSBK Team returned to on-track action at the Circuito de Jerez–Ángel Nieto in Spain for a two-day private test on 21–22 January, as preparations for the 2026 MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship continued. Despite challenging and changeable weather conditions, Stefano Manzi and Remy Gardner were able to gather valuable mileage and feedback aboard the Yamaha R1.

Wet Conditions Disrupt Opening Day at Jerez

Testing on Day 1 was heavily affected by persistent rain, limiting track time for much of the session. Stefano Manzi was the only GYTR GRT Yamaha rider to venture out early, completing 28 laps on wet tyres and gaining his first experience of the Yamaha R1 in full wet conditions. The reigning 2025 WorldSSP Champion set a best lap of 1’55.044, placing fourth on the combined timesheets.

As weather conditions deteriorated further in the afternoon, Manzi elected to remain in the garage to preserve valuable testing opportunities later in the season. On the other side of the pit box, Remy Gardner opted not to ride on the opening day due to the unfavourable conditions.

Improved Running on Day 2 Before Rain Returns

The second and final day began with a damp track following overnight rainfall, but conditions gradually improved as the circuit dried. This allowed both riders to complete productive runs on dry tarmac and focus on setup work and rider adaptation.

Manzi completed 36 laps, posting a fastest time of 1’40.347, while Gardner logged 34 laps and recorded a best lap of 1’41.249 as he continued to rebuild his feeling with the Yamaha R1.

However, rain returned at around 16:00 local time, forcing an early end to the test and cutting short the team’s planned programme.

Focus Shifts to Portugal Test

Despite the weather interruptions, the Jerez test provided important data as the GYTR GRT Yamaha WorldSBK Team continues its build-up to the 2026 season. Manzi and Gardner will be back in action next week at the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve in Portimão for another two-day private test, where improved conditions are hoped for.

Rider Reactions

Stefano Manzi – Best Lap: 1’40.347
“Finally we’re back in action, and I couldn’t wait to get back on track to improve my feeling with the Yamaha R1. Riding in the wet on Day 1 could be useful during the season, as we may face similar conditions. On the second day we had dry running and managed some good laps. Unfortunately, the rain disrupted our plan, but we’ll continue working and improving during the next test in Portugal.”

Remy Gardner – Best Lap: 1’41.249
“It was great to be back on the Yamaha R1 and to see everyone again. The weather limited our track time, so we had to manage things carefully. Day 2 finally gave us dry conditions, which helped me regain confidence on the bike. Even though we had to stop early, it was a positive restart, and we’ll keep building in Portugal.”
