If you’re a fan of custom motorcycles, you probably know that BMW is one of the top names in the game. WalzWerk Motorcycles, based in Hockenheim, is taking that reputation even further with their latest limited production R12 Scrambler, already a fan favourite.
At WalzWerk, it’s not just a one-off project—it’s a full-fledged production line, rolling out two new custom bikes every week. Out of the roughly 100 bikes they craft each year, about 80 are from their wildly popular SCHIZZO® range, which is based on the timeless BMW R80 and R100 models.
Marcus Walz from WalzWerk stated: “But we also have a nice lineup of other, modern BMWs in our portfolio, like the R18 and the R9T. Around twelve bikes of each, we build per year as well. And since BMW discontinued the R9T, we are now adding the R12 to our portfolio.”
“We started with a Scrambler, which was the wish of BMW Germany. It will be followed by a Bobber (soon to be completed), a Cafe Racer, and a classic Superbike.” –Marcus Walz
After receiving the new R12 from BMW, Marcus and his team at WalzWerk Motorcycles got to work, finding it an ideal base for customization. They quickly noted the easy removal of the rear unit with just four bolts. Testing a SCHIZZO® subframe, they saw potential in its look, even though it didn’t fit. This led to the creation of a new subframe with an integrated pan, topped off with a seat unit in M Sport red.
Next, the team shaped a custom seat unit, beautifully upholstered in red from the M Sport colour palette. The tank, adorned with the full suite of M Sport colours, enhances the bike’s unmistakable classic BMW vibe.
Marcus explained, “The tank is the stock steel fuel tank of the R12 Basic, which we cut off to create some knee dents for a more classic look. A Le Mans style fuel cap completes the vintage appearance.”
To finalize the visuals, Marcus designed new fenders for both ends, ensuring they were both functional and retained the clean, streamlined look WalzWerk is known for. These slimline fenders, painted to match the tank, were attached using 3D-printed mounts, achieving a unique look.
The tank, featuring M Sport colours, was modified for a classic look with knee dents and a Le Mans style fuel cap. Marcus also designed new fenders, attached them with 3D-printed mounts, and painted them to match the tank. To achieve a scrambler look, they lifted the bike using custom suspension solutions from Touratech, including extended front forks and a fully adjustable rear shock. They also fitted cross-spoke wheels with Continental TKC80 tyres and laced them with GS1250 rims.
The R12’s 1170cc Boxer twin engine, despite Euro5+ regulations, delivers 109bhp and 115 nm of torque. WalzWerk enhanced it with a full exhaust system from Italy’s SC Project and branded air filters. Additional custom parts include WalzWerk’s fat bars, aluminium mirrors, LED lighting, and a side-mounted license plate holder.
Priced at €29,950 (RM153K), the R12 Scrambler will be produced at a rate of one per month, with customization options available through their online ordering system. BMW Motorrad will tour the bike for the next year, and orders are already coming in.
