Riichi Takahira etched his name into the history books after becoming the first Japanese rider to win the 2026 FIM Yamaha R3 BLU CRU World Cup following an intense championship-deciding finale at Circuito Estoril.
Heading into the final round, Takahira held a slim four-point advantage over Dominican Republic rider Xarly Mendez, while Brazil’s Aymon Bocanegra also remained mathematically in contention after claiming victory in Saturday’s opening race.
The championship battle took a dramatic turn just three laps into the decisive race when Mendez crashed at Turn 7. Although the Dominican rider managed to remount and finish the race, he crossed the line outside the points, ending his hopes of lifting the title.
Takahira, meanwhile, kept his composure throughout the race. A seventh-place finish proved enough to secure the championship after taking fourth place in Race 1, completing an impressive campaign that showcased remarkable consistency and determination.

Takahira’s Remarkable Rookie Campaign
Takahira’s championship-winning season did not begin with immediate success. The Japanese rider opened his debut campaign at Balaton Park with a pair of seventh-place finishes before steadily building momentum throughout the year.
His breakthrough came in Round 2 at Aragón, where he claimed his first podium with a second-place finish. From there, Takahira established himself as a genuine title contender, producing a dominant double victory at Magny-Cours during Round 4.
Another race victory at Cremona saw him take over the championship lead heading into the season finale at Estoril. By combining fourth place in Race 1 with seventh in the final race, Takahira successfully defended his narrow points advantage to become the 2026 FIM Yamaha R3 BLU CRU World Cup Champion.
His championship triumph now puts him in line for a Yamaha-supported ride in the 2027 FIM Sportbike World Championship, marking the next step in his racing career.

Mendez Finishes Runner-Up as Bocanegra Claims Third
Despite his unfortunate crash in the final race, Xarly Mendez secured second place in the overall championship standings after leading the title race for much of the season.
Brazilian rider Aymon Bocanegra completed the championship podium in third overall after following up his Race 1 victory with another strong performance to finish third in the season finale.
The final race of the 2026 campaign was won by American rider Chris Clark, while Italy’s Emanuele Pastore finished second to round out the podium.

Takahira Reflects on Historic Achievement
Speaking after securing the title, Takahira expressed his delight following a memorable rookie season.
“I am so happy to win the championship. The race was very crazy, so I tried my best to get the best result possible. It has been an incredible season. Thank you to all of my family and everyone who has supported me.”
With the 2026 FIM Yamaha R3 BLU CRU World Cup now concluded, Takahira’s historic title marks another successful graduate of Yamaha’s BLU CRU rider development programme as he prepares for the next stage of his international racing career.
