Pirelli Completes Another 2027 MotoGP Tyre Test at Red Bull Ring

18 riders from all five manufacturers took part in the Austria test as Pirelli continued development of the tyres that will become mandatory for the 2027 MotoGP season.

Pirelli has completed another stage of its development programme for the tyres that will be supplied to the 2027 FIM Grand Prix World Championship, with an extensive test session held at the Red Bull Ring in Austria.

The Italian tyres brand will become MotoGP’s exclusive tyre supplier from the 2027 season, when the championship introduces a new technical era featuring 850cc motorcycles.

A total of 18 racing and test riders participated in the session, representing their respective brands on the grid. Honda was represented by Johann Zarco, Diogo Moreira and Takaaki Nakagami, while Yamaha fielded Toprak Razgatlıoğlu, Jack Miller, Izan Guevara and Augusto Fernández.

Ducati’s test programme included Marc Márquez, Franco Morbidelli and Fermín Aldeguer, while Aprilia was represented by Marco Bezzecchi, Raúl Fernández and Lorenzo Savadori. KTM completed the line-up with Pedro Acosta, Brad Binder, Pol Espargaró, Maverick Viñales and Senna Agius.

Future MotoGP rookie Nicolò Bulega, who has been among the fastest riders during Ducati’s private testing programme, did not participate as he focuses on his WorldSBK title challenge in Cremona.

The test featured a combination of prototype 850cc motorcycles and current-generation 1000cc machines adapted to simulate the 2027 technical configuration.

Pirelli supplied soft, medium and hard slick compounds for both the front and rear tyres, allowing manufacturers and teams to conduct their own testing programmes. The tyre manufacturer recommended that teams begin with the softer compounds before progressing to the medium and hard options.

Testing took place under stable and sunny conditions, with track temperatures ranging from 19°C to 38°C. Pirelli engineers worked closely with the manufacturers, teams and riders throughout the session, collecting data and feedback on the performance of the prototype tyres.

According to Pirelli Motorcycle Racing Director Giorgio Barbier, the feedback from riders was generally positive: “Today’s test represents another important step forward in the development of our 2027 range. The feedback from the riders was positive overall, particularly regarding the grip and stability offered by our solutions.”

The data gathered at the Red Bull Ring will contribute to the continued development and refinement of Pirelli’s 2027 MotoGP tyre range as the championship prepares for its new technical regulations.

With the 2027 season set to bring both 850cc engines and Pirelli tyres to MotoGP, manufacturers are continuing to use testing opportunities such as this to adapt their machines and gather data ahead of the regulation change.
