Low-Level Gulf Air Boeing 787 Flypast Set for Sepang F1 Race 

A Gulf Air Boeing 787 Dreamliner will conduct a low flypast at Sepang International Circuit on Sunday ahead of the Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia.

The public has been advised not to be alarmed by low-flying aircraft over the Sepang International Circuit (SIC) and surrounding areas during this weekend’s Formula 1 event.

The Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) said aircraft operations will take place between 2pm and 3pm on the scheduled dates, with aircraft expected to fly at lower altitudes than usual. The operations have been coordinated with the relevant authorities and will be carried out in accordance with applicable safety requirements.

One of Gulf Air’s Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft is scheduled to perform a low-level flypast over SIC on Sunday, October 4, between approximately 2.45pm and 3pm, shortly before the Formula 1 race begins at 3pm. The official F1 timetable confirms that the Grand Prix is scheduled to start at 3pm local time.

CAAM deputy chief executive officer Zainul Abidin Maslan previously said the flypast had been coordinated between CAAM’s air traffic control centre and the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) control tower.

CAAM also reminded drone operators that unauthorized drone flights are prohibited in the affected airspace. It warned that drones could pose a serious risk to low-flying aircraft and people on the ground.

“Drone operators must obtain the necessary authorisation before conducting any flight, while those operating without authorisation could face investigation and enforcement action under the Civil Aviation Regulations 2016 and other applicable laws,” CAAM said.

The authority urged members of the public and drone operators to comply with the restrictions and cooperate with the relevant authorities to ensure the aircraft operations are conducted safely.

Meanwhile, airlines have also advised passengers travelling through Kuala Lumpur International Airport to allow additional time for their journeys during the busy F1 weekend.

Malaysia is hosting the Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix at Sepang International Circuit from October 2 to 4, 2026. The event marks Formula 1’s return to Sepang after the circuit last hosted the Malaysian Grand Prix in 2017.

The unusual arrangement came after the Bahrain Grand Prix was relocated to Malaysia, with the event retaining its official Bahrain Grand Prix title. The race is being held between the Azerbaijan and Singapore rounds of the 2026 F1 calendar.
