JKR Investigates Motorcycle Crashes on Wet Federal Highway Lane

The investigation will examine the lane’s wet-weather grip, pavement condition and possible oil contamination following multiple motorcycle crashes.

The Public Works Department (JKR) is investigating a series of motorcycle crashes on the Federal Highway motorcycle lane near Subang Jaya after a 42-second video showing several motorcycles lying on the road went viral on social media. 

The video showed several motorcycles on the coloured motorcycle lane, with a number of riders seen by the roadside. The surface also appeared wet, while other motorcyclists were seen slowing down as they passed through the area. The social media post claimed that the incidents occurred during rain and that similar crashes had taken place twice. 

Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said JKR had launched an investigation to determine the cause of the crashes.  The investigation will examine several factors, including the skid resistance of the surface when wet, pavement condition, possible oil or diesel contamination, quality of work implementation and other factors that could have contributed to the incidents.

Nanta said the exact cause has not yet been established. JKR is also considering factors such as riding speed and traffic conditions at the location.

Preliminary information indicated that the green-painted surface was designed and installed as an anti-skid finish in accordance with the prescribed specifications. Light rain was reportedly falling when the crashes occurred. As part of the remedial work, JKR will carry out mill-and-pave works at the affected section and install a 40km/h advisory speed limit sign.

“If the investigation finds weaknesses in the materials, work implementation, design or maintenance aspects, we will take the necessary corrective action,” Nanta said in a social media post.

He also expressed his sympathy to the motorcyclists involved and stressed that the safety of road users, particularly motorcyclists who use the lane daily, remains a priority.

In August, JKR explained that the coloured surface at the Subang exit was a localised surface treatment implemented based on engineering considerations and with approval from the relevant authorities.

The department said the coloured surface was intended to highlight areas with a higher risk of conflict, including bends and exit lanes, while reminding motorcyclists to exercise greater caution when passing through the section.
