Owning a motorcycle is definitely a life changing experience. It could make your life easier, it could be more practical, it could even be a lifelong dream come true to some. The feeling of seeing your motorcycle rolling of the showroom floor and riding it for the first time, it is definitely an experience that could put a smile on your face.

However, owning a motorcycle also comes with a set of responsibilities that needs to be kept in mind. Like other vehicles, motorcycles also have a set of things that you need to take care and be aware of. Small mistakes in the early stages can affect performance, safety, and the motorcycle’s lifespan. For long time riders, they already know what to be aware of, but for new riders, they could potentially do these mistakes.

1. Not Following the Engine Break-In Period

If you scrolled through the internet and you stumble upon the term “Engine Break-In”, it is when new motorcycles need to be given some time for its internal components to properly adjust and settle. Many new riders tend to get excited and immediately ride at high RPMs or aggressively accelerate. Following the manufacturer’s recommended break-in procedure helps to ensure smoother engine performance.

During the break-in period which is usually the first 500–1,000 km, engine components are still bedding in. Therefore, it is best to avoid any unnecessary stress on the engine during the early mileage period. Following the manufacturer’s recommendations can help ensure better long-term performance and durability. Check the owner’s manual for the recommended mileage limits and riding guidelines.

2. Skipping or Delaying the First Scheduled Service

The first service is one of the most important maintenance milestones after buying a new motorcycle. Technicians will inspect the motorcycle during the first service. The engineoil may need to be changed after the break-in period to remove any contaminants or metal particles from the initial engine wear.

Technicians can also identify if there are any loose bolts, adjust the chain,, and check for any issues that may have developed during the break-in period. Skipping it can effect the motorcycle’s long-term reliability and, in some cases, affect the motorcycle’s warranty.

3. Neglecting Basic Motorcycle Maintenance

Many first-time owners simply hop on and ride without checking their motorcycle. New owners often rely on workshops without understanding any basic motorcycle maintenance. As a motorcycle rider, it is vital to know at least the basics and try to do it themselves.

The basic but important things that riders should know are checking the engine oil level, checking the motorcycle’s tyre pressure, cleaning and lubricating the chain, checking the brake fluid levels, or even inspecting the motorcycle’s lights and signals. These maybe are just simple habits that only takes a few minutes, but it can definitely make a big difference towards the motorcycles lifespan.

4. Ignoring Warning Signs From the Motorcycle

Many new motorcycle owners tend to ignore small warning signs from their bikes because they think it is not a serious issue. Strange engine sounds, unusual vibrations, difficulty starting, or poor braking performance are some signs that should not be overlooked.

Ignoring these warning signs can cause small problems to become bigger and could lead to more expensive repairs in the future. If riders notice anything unusual with their motorcycle, it is always better to inspect it early to ensure the bike remains safe and reliable.

5. Waiting Until Something Breaks Before Servicing

One common mistake that new motorcycle owners make is only sending their bike for servicing when there is already a problem. Some riders believe that as long as their motorcycle can start and move, there is no need for regular maintenance.

However, preventive maintenance is important to keep the motorcycle performing at its best and avoid unexpected breakdowns. Regular servicing can help maintain the engine performance, improve safety, and detect any potential issues before they become more serious and cost a fortune to repair.

Conclusion

Owning a motorcycle for the first time is an exciting experience, but it also comes with the responsibility of taking proper care of it. Simple mistakes such as skipping the first service, ignoring maintenance, or overlooking warning signs can affect the motorcycle’s performance and lifespan in the long run.

By building good riding and maintenance habits from the beginning, new motorcycle owners can ensure their bikes remain safe, reliable, and enjoyable to ride. Regular servicing and inspections can also help identify potential issues before they become bigger problems.
