The number of motorcycles on Türkiye’s roads has surged in recent years, more than doubling to 7.2 million since 2019. While this growth reflects changing transport trends, it has also brought a worrying rise in road accidents involving motorcyclists.

According to official data, motorcycles now make up over 20% of all registered vehicles, up from just over 14% a few years ago. Their growth has also outpaced other vehicle types, highlighting how quickly two-wheel transport is expanding across the country.

But with that rise comes a serious downside. Motorcycles are now involved in more than half of all traffic accidents. In 2024, they were linked to nearly 46% of crashes, and that figure climbed to over 50% the following year. Fatalities have also increased, with daily deaths averaging around 4 to 5 people.

Still, there are signs of improvement. In the first few months of this year, motorcycle-related deaths dropped significantly by nearly 30% compared to the same period last year. Fatal accidents and injuries also saw a decline, suggesting that stricter enforcement and safety campaigns are starting to make an impact.

Interior Minister Mustafa Çiftçi described the drop as encouraging but made it clear that the ultimate goal is zero road deaths. He pointed out that with more motorcycles on the road, both riders and drivers need to be more aware and cautious.

Speeding, unsafe lane changes, and reckless weaving between vehicles remain the biggest causes of accidents. Authorities stress that safe riding isn’t just about wearing a helmet—it requires focus, awareness, and disciplined driving habits.

At the same time, responsibility doesn’t fall only on motorcyclists. Drivers of cars and other vehicles also play a role in keeping roads safe. Simple actions like checking mirrors, signaling properly, and respecting motorcycles’ space can go a long way.

As motorcycles continue to grow in popularity, the challenge for Türkiye is clear: balancing convenience with safety, and ensuring that all road users share responsibility for safer streets.
