A frightening moment on Sabah’s west coast railway line has turned into a powerful story of courage and community support.

Six motorcycles destroyed while helping to stop a train with failed brakes will be replaced, Melalap assemblyman Jamawi Jaafar confirmed. The replacement was agreed to by Sabah Chief Minister Hajiji Noor after the dramatic incident on the Tenom–Pangi route.

Jamawi, in a Facebook post, expressed heartfelt thanks on behalf of the six young men who sacrificed their motorcycles to slow the runaway train.

Split-Second Courage

The incident occurred when a train traveling from Tenom to Pangi reportedly suffered brake failure. On board were teachers from Sekolah Kebangsaan Pangi, along with other passengers, including toddlers.

As the situation escalated, villagers took immediate action. They placed six motorcycles and a trolley on the railway tracks in an effort to slow the train before it could reach a more dangerous section.

The train destroyed the motorcycles on impact, but the obstruction slowed it down enough for the driver to regain control. Authorities confirmed that all passengers and the driver were safe.

Recognition and Relief

Photos of the damaged motorcycles later circulated online, along with a video recorded by a passenger capturing tense moments inside the train as adults and children huddled together.

Jamawi also praised the train driver for remaining calm under pressure, describing his composure as crucial in preventing disaster.

With the Chief Minister agreeing to replace the six motorcycles, the young men who stepped forward will not have to bear the financial burden of their brave act alone.

What could have ended in tragedy instead became a testament to quick thinking, unity, and the strength of Sabah’s interior communities.
