As we reach the final stretch of 2025, one thing is clear, Malaysians remain deeply connected to motorcycles. Beyond the total number of bikes sold this year, certain brands, models, categories, and even colours continue to stand out as local favourites.

In this first edition of iMotorbike Wrapped 2025, we take a closer look at preferences among Malaysian motorbike enthusiasts, based on data collected throughout the year on iMotorbike, Southeast Asia’s leading digital platform for buying and selling pre-owned motorcycles.

Why Pre-Owned Motorcycles Continue to Win

With the rising cost of living, many consumers are becoming more value-conscious. Buying a brand-new motorcycle isn’t always practical, whether due to pricing, financing, or changing priorities and that’s where the pre-owned market comes into play.

Malaysia’s e-commerce market is projected to grow 14.7% in 2025, far outpacing national GDP growth. At the heart of this acceleration is a strong demand for used motorcycles, driven by affordability without compromising quality.

“With the rising cost of living, Malaysians are prioritising affordable, value-for-money purchases. Pre-owned items such as motorcycles naturally fit into this shift because they offer significant savings without sacrificing quality,” — Gil Carmo, CEO and Co-Founder of iMotorbike.

Top Motorcycle Brands on iMotorbike in 2025

Top 5 Brands Sold

  1. Yamaha
  2. Honda
  3. Modenas
  4. Kawasaki
  5. SYM

Unsurprisingly, Japanese brands continue to dominate. Studies show Malaysian riders prioritise reliability, durability, and wide model availability, areas where Yamaha and Honda have long excelled.

Yamaha: Still the People’s Favourite

Yamaha’s journey in Malaysia began through Hong Leong Yamaha Motor (HLYM), established in 1979 as a joint venture between Hong Leong Group and Yamaha Japan. From the locally assembled RX100 to hitting the one-million-unit milestone by 1994, Yamaha has grown alongside Malaysian riders.

Today, Yamaha motorcycles remain a common sight across the country, from urban commutes to weekend rides.

Honda: A Legacy Built on Trust

Honda entered Malaysia in 1958 through Tan Sri Loh Boon Siew, following his meeting with Soichiro Honda. From the iconic Super Cub to the formation of Boon Siew Honda in 2008, Honda’s local production milestones, including the Batu Kawan plant, have solidified its position as one of Malaysia’s most trusted motorcycle brands.

Rising Competition from Regional Brands

Over the past two years, Chinese and Taiwanese brands have steadily gained traction. Competitive pricing, improved build quality, and attractive designs have boosted demand, especially in specific segments.

MForce Bike Holdings Sdn Bhd plays a key role as the importer for brands such as CFMoto, QJMotor, and SYM. SYM, in particular, has built a strong reputation over the years with models like the VF3i and Bonus 110, especially among underbone riders.

Local Production: Modenas and Kawasaki

Malaysia’s motorcycle manufacturing scene is largely driven by CKD operations, with Modenas being the most recognisable local name. Since 2022, models 650cc and below derived from Kawasaki have been rebadged as Modenas, following Kawasaki Motors Ltd increasing its equity stake in the local manufacturer.

Top 5 Models Sold on iMotorbike in 2025

Best-Selling Models

  1. Yamaha YZF-R25
  2. Yamaha Y15ZR
  3. Honda RS150R
  4. Modenas Lagenda 115
  5. Yamaha LC135

Why These Bikes Stand Out

Yamaha YZF-R25

Topping the list is Yamaha’s 250cc sportbike, a surprise for some, as many would expect an underbone to lead. The R25 has dominated its segment since launch, offering sporty looks, manageable power, and everyday usability. It’s popular among both younger riders and experienced enthusiasts.

Yamaha Y15ZR (Y-Suku)

A true Malaysian icon. The Y15ZR is everywhere from daily commuting, deliveries, Cub Prix racing, and heavy custom builds. It remains one of the most widely used 150cc underbone motorcycles in the country.

Honda RS150R

The Y15ZR’s long-time rival continues to hold strong. Riders who prefer sharper styling and a slightly higher riding position often gravitate towards the RS150R, making it a consistent best-seller year after year.

Yamaha Lagenda 115

Not everyone wants a clutch and the Lagenda 115 proves that point. Affordable, durable, and easy to ride, it’s especially popular among students and delivery riders.

Yamaha LC135

A legend that needs little introduction. The LC135 has been part of Malaysian motorcycle culture for decades and still enjoys a loyal following. Stylish, clutchless, and timeless “tak V8, tak kawan” remains very much alive.

Most Popular Motorcycle Categories on iMotorbike

Best-Selling Categories

  1. Moped (Underbone / Kapcai)
  2. Scooter
  3. Naked Bike
  4. Sport Bike
  5. Supersport

It’s no surprise that mopeds dominate the list. Kapcai motorcycles remain a staple in many Malaysian households, valued for their affordability, practicality, and low running costs.

Scooters follow closely, growing in popularity due to their ease of use and comfort, especially in urban traffic.

Naked bikes take third place, appealing to riders looking for versatility and everyday rideability. Meanwhile, sport and supersport motorcycles continue to attract younger riders and adrenaline seekers, even though they make up a smaller portion of overall sales.

Favourite Motorcycle Colours in 2025

Most Popular Colours

  1. Red
  2. Blue
  3. Black
  4. Grey
  5. Green

When it comes to colour choices, Malaysians still favour bold and classic tones. Red and blue remain top picks, often associated with sporty designs and racing heritage. Black and grey appeal to riders who prefer a cleaner, more understated look, while green, though more niche, continues to attract brand-loyal fans.

Why Riders Choose iMotorbike

Every motorcycle on iMotorbike goes through a 170-point inspection by certified mechanics, comes with a six-month warranty, and is supported by a six-day return policy.

Financing, insurance, and delivery are fully integrated, creating what Gil Carmo describes as: “A consistent, straightforward experience that removes friction points traditional dealerships struggle with.” This transparent and secure process has been a key driver of repeat customers and long-term trust.

Wrapping Up 2025

From trusted Japanese brands and legendary kapcai models to rising regional players and evolving rider preferences, iMotorbike Wrapped 2025 paints a clear picture of what Malaysian motorcyclists truly value reliability, affordability, and choice.

And as the pre-owned market continues to grow, one thing is certain: the road ahead for Malaysian riders, and iMotorbike, looks just as exciting.

Then we have naked bikes on the third of the list of most sold bikes, followed by naked bike category and supersport, the category that mostly the younger gen and high adrenaline chasers love to buy.
