For some, the midlife crisis is all about horsepower. For others, it’s about crema. ECM’s latest creation, the Big Coffee Boxer, makes the case that you don’t actually have to choose between the two.

Built in Germany, the Big Coffee Boxer takes an authentic BMW Boxer motorcycle engine block and transforms it into a fully functional single-group espresso machine. This isn’t a quirky decorative shell; inside is a serious coffee setup featuring an E61 brewing group, a heat exchange system, and a 1.9-litre boiler. It can be plumbed directly into a water line, and even offers optional pre-infusion for those who take their extraction as seriously as their torque curves.

Garage Art Meets Café Performance

Weighing just 64 kg and stretching 90 cm wide, the Big Coffee Boxer looks like it belongs on a custom bike stand. Every angle screams mechanical intent, from the fins of the Boxer engine to the polished metal detailing. It’s the kind of espresso machine that would be equally at home in a pit garage or a high-end roastery.

ECM will only build 80 units, each handcrafted and priced at €7,900 (around RM41,001.00). With that price tag and exclusivity, this is as much a collector’s piece as it is a caffeine delivery system. Expect a waitlist, especially among enthusiasts who already have a BMW R-series parked in the driveway.

More Than a Gimmick

While the design nods to motorcycle heritage, the Big Coffee Boxer is no novelty. It’s built to deliver café-quality espresso, marrying industrial engineering with artisan brewing. In that sense, it’s less of a coffee machine that happens to look like an engine, and more of an engine repurposed to fuel humans instead of wheels.

Whether it ends up in a workshop, a café, or a private collection, the Big Coffee Boxer is a statement. It says that the love of machines doesn’t stop at the garage door—it continues into the kitchen, onto the counter, and straight into the cup.
