Gresini Racing’s Alex Marquez sustained a broken hand following a dramatic crash during the 2025 MotoGP Dutch Grand Prix at Assen, dealing a serious blow to his title challenge. The Spaniard is undergoing surgery in Spain following the crash and now recovering with hopes of recovery before the German GP at Sachsenring.

Marquez was battling for the lead in the opening laps when he attempted a move on KTM’s Pedro Acosta at Turn 5. The two riders made slight contact, and moments later, Marquez crashed violently on the exit, appearing to flick his front brake lever against Acosta’s rear wheel. He was immediately taken to the circuit’s medical centre where X-rays confirmed a broken hand.

The crash came just a day after Marquez’s dominant Sprint Race victory at Assen, which had reignited his championship campaign. The injury now forces him into a two-week recovery period ahead of the next round in Germany.

His older brother Marc Marquez, riding for the factory Ducati Lenovo Team, went on to win the Dutch GP. Upon hearing of Alex’s injury in parc fermé, Marc dedicated his victory to his brother. Marc now leads the championship standings by 68 points over Alex, who remains in second.

Despite riding a year-old Ducati, Alex Marquez has been one of the standout performers of the season, consistently outperforming rivals on newer factory machines, including reigning champion Francesco Bagnaia.

Meanwhile, it was a race to forget for the entire BK8 Gresini Racing MotoGP team. Alex’s teammate, Fermin Aldeguer, also crashed out at Turn 11 in a highside, triggering a chain reaction that caught up Honda’s Joan Mir and Yamaha’s Fabio Quartararo. Mir was unable to continue, while Quartararo dropped down the order and finished outside the points.

After a promising weekend, the Gresini squad leaves Assen empty-handed on race day, despite the high of Saturday’s Sprint victory.
